ESRI Announces "The Geography Network Challenge" ArcIMS-based GIS Applications Competition

Redlands, California-ESRI, the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software, announces its co-sponsorship of the Geography Network Challenge, a competition to increase awareness of Internet mapping services, which enable the publishing and sharing of geographic information locally, nationally, and globally.

With the creation of the Geography Network earlier this year, ESRI established the framework for an interactive, Internet-based GIS platform. The Geography Network is a collaborative and multi-participant system for publishing, sharing, and using digital geographic information on the Internet. The intent of the Geography Network is to create a universal site where GIS users can find data and applications related to their own projects. Located at www.geographynetwork.com, the network has received thousands of hits since its inception.

Currently, there are more than 600 services offered on the Geography Network by a wide variety of providers. Content includes mapping, geoservices, and data sets that are published by both commercial and noncommercial organizations. The Geography Network Challenge, sponsored by both ESRI and the National Geographic Society, is a competition intended to increase the awareness and highlight the numerous capabilities of Internet-based mapping services and applications. Internet-based entries eligible to compete in the challenge include live map services for presenting geographic data and spatial solutions that offer more advanced tools for applications such as lifestyle mapping, environmental mapping, or economic development.

Categories include G-Government, data sharing, education, citizen-government, application services, conservation, and science. Winning entries will receive awards totaling more than $30,000 in credit that can be used for ESRI software training and workshops, with a grand prize of $5,000 in ESRI credit.

Those interested in participating in The Geography Network Challenge are invited to visit www.geographynetwork.com/challenge/ and complete the Challenge Interest Form.

For more than 30 years, ESRI has been the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software with more than 300,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than 90 countries, and more than 1,050 business partners. ESRI's goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
