Maiden GSLV ( Geo Synchronous Launch Vehicle ) to be Launched by India in Feb 2001
India is all set to take a major leap in Space technology with the likely launch of its first Geo Synchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV)
during the second half of February 2001.
During a review of the status and progress of major Space projects by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Wednesday, Department of
Space Secretary K kasturirangan apprised the Prime Minister of the ongoing preparation for the maiden GSLV flight, planned between 16 and 27 next year. Dr. Kasturirangan
also apprised the Prime Minister of progress in the project on the Technology Experimental Satellite (TES), which is to be launched in mid-2001.
The Prime Minister on Wednesday reviewed th status and progress of the major activities of the Department of Space, particularly about the projects which will fructify in the next one year.
Dr. Kasturirangan said that all the hardware required for various stages of the maiden GSLV flight, had reached Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The Russian supplied Cryo stage had also been received and was being
prepared for integration.
The assembly of the stages will begin by mid-November and the first flight of the GSLV would be carried out between February 16 to 27. For the launch of INSAT-3C, all the major subsystems had been realised and the
integration was being taken up at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Satellite Centre in bangalore. After the assembly and testing, the spacecraft is slated for shipment to Kourou, French Guyana from where it'll
be lifted off to space by Ariane launch vechile in mid 2001.
