ASPRS and MAPPS to Sponsor DEM Specialty Conference in Fall 2001

The Imaging & Geospatial Information Society (ASPRS) and the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS) are jointly planning a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) Specialty Conference for October 31-November 2, 2001, in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The conference format will open with a keynote address on the first day, then continue as specific consecutive sessions covering applications, standards, technologies, and how to make it work for the end user. There will be an accompanying vendor exhibit and poster sessions as well. EarthData International Chairman and CEO Bryan Logan and USGS National Digital Elevation Program (NDEP) Manager Ken Osborn are co-chairing the technical program. Preliminary topics scheduled to be covered include technology, data and utilization of IFSAR, LIDAR, Photogrammetry, Bathymetric LIDAR, and SONAR; the present and future development of enabling technologies; accuracy and cost comparison of the various technologies; procurement policies; current NDEP plans and activities; and research/development/cost sharing opportunities. Invited speakers will represent state, local and federal government, as well as private industry.Simultaneous with the development of the specialty conference, Dave Maune, Director of Mapping and GIS Services, Dewberry and Davis, is serving as editor of an ASPRS publication tentatively titled, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs): New Technologies and Applications. While covering many of the same topic areas as the planned conference, the book will be a stand-alone publication from ASPRS and is not intended to mirror the conference or to be viewed as the conference proceedings publication.

"The idea for this specialty conference and book came out of discussions following the ASPRS annual conference in May," said ASPRS Executive Director James R. Plasker. "A number of people approached us about holding a specialty conference on LIDAR and DEMs and we felt the time was right to move forward with the idea. When we discovered that MAPPS was also considering a specialty conference on a similar topic, we approached John Palatiello, MAPPS executive director, to see if we could combine our efforts to host one benchmark conference." "A number of MAPPS member firms, as well as our Board of Directors, were discussing the need for an educational program on the emerging market for DEM data, LIDAR and other airborne digital data technologies. When we discovered that our friends and colleagues in ASPRS were having similar discussions, we immediately recognized the tremendous opportunity a joint MAPPS-ASPRS specialty conference would provide," said MAPPS Executive Director John Palatiello.
