International Lidar Mapping Association (IIMA) Established

New industry association to represent growing LIDAR interests and promote LIDAR technology.

Responding to industry demand for an association specifically addressing the LIDAR industry, Andy Bogle, president of Technical Marketing Solutions, has agreed to help establish the association and organize its first meeting next year. “The International LIDAR Mapping Association (ILMA) has been created to promote the benefits of LIDAR technology throughout the mapping community”, said Bogle. “It has already received the support of several leading companies and we anticipate a strong response.”

Far from being a pioneering technology, LIDAR mapping is now emerging as a viable commercial alternative for a wide variety of digital mapping programs. LIDAR systems are in operation throughout the world, where high-resolution, three-dimensional data sets and a quick processing turnaround are required.

ILMA will bring together LIDAR manufacturers, operators, component suppliers, data processors and end-users in an inaugural forum style meeting where ideas and knowledge can be freely exchanged.

In supporting the association concept, and agreeing to be a founding sponsor, Don Wicks, president of EnerQuest Systems LLC and a leading LIDAR operator said, “It’s time for the LIDAR industry to get together to promote the benefits of this tremendous mapping technology. I look forward to the forum and to sharing ideas with others for the benefit of the LIDAR industry as a whole.”

The 2001 Inaugural LIDAR Forum, “Mapping Our Future” will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2001, at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Hotel in Denver. The full day agenda will include presentations on LIDAR and Digital Image Processing, as well as a panel discussion about the issues facing the LIDAR industry such as Technology Availability and Breaking the Conventional Mapping Mindset. The forum meeting will be preceded by an icebreaker reception on the evening of Wednesday, February 7, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet delegates from every sector of the LIDAR industry.

The 2001 Inaugural LIDAR Forum is sponsored in part by Applanix Corporation, EnerQuest Systems LLC, TerraPoint, Inc., and Z/I Imaging. The cost of attending the inaugural meeting is $180 per person, which includes lunch.

ILMA is seeking speakers for the inaugural meeting and also welcomes organizations interested in becoming association sponsors.
