Lucent Public Safety Systems and Xmarc Team to Develop a Mapping Service for Wireless E9-1-1 Emergency Response
Xmarc, Inc. (and Lucent Public Safety Systems today announced a complementary technology agreement to develop PSMap(TM), a centrally based mapping service for wireless E9-1-1.
PSMap will deliver reliable and accurate maps to the nation's public safety call centers -- or Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) -- assisting them in meeting the challenges of responding to wireless E9-1-1 calls. Lucent Public Safety Systems (LPSS) plans to offer this nationwide to public safety call centers beginning in 2001.
Wireless E9-1-1 is one of the most pressing challenges facing the nation's public safety community. Roughly 25% to 30% of all E9-1-1 calls are currently placed from wireless phones, and this percentage is expected to increase sharply as wireless phone usage continues to accelerate over the next few years.
Today, most PSAPs are able to identify the precise location of wireline E9-1-1 callers, but not wireless E9-1-1 callers, without caller assistance. An FCC mandate requires that by Oct. 1, 2001, PSAPs be able to automatically identify the location of wireless E9-1-1 callers.
Under the terms of
this technology agreement, components in Xmarc's Wireless &
Internet Infrastructure Software Environment (WIISE) platform,
including Xmarc's Enterprise Spatial Manager (ESM), and its
geo-location and map rendering location services, will be used by
Lucent's Public Safety Systems division to develop and deploy PSMap.
PSMap can provide the mapping data needed by PSAPs to meet the
challenges of the FCC mandate. The PSMap solution brings together
applications, information, infrastructure and support into a single,
cost-effective and scalable solution likely to fit within the PSAP's
fixed operational budget, while many competitive solutions would
require PSAPs to internally build Graphical Information Systems
(GIS) and database technology expertise to support in-house mapping
