Worldwide Preparations for GIS Day 2000 Under Way
GIS Day 2000, the technological centerpiece of the National Geographic Society's well-known Geography Awareness Week celebration, will be staged this year on Wednesday, November 15. Sponsored by such prominent organizations as the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Library of Congress, and ESRI, plans for GIS Day 2000 are well under way throughout the world.
Building on the success of last year's event, organizers are planning to educate more than three million people on the benefits and importance of geographic information system (GIS) technology during this year's event. Activities are planned for schools, businesses, and public and private agencies.
A sampling of proposed international events include a rally and GIS workshop in Bangladesh, a demonstration at a children's museum in Colombia about how GIS influences their lives, the use of GIS on the Internet in Iceland, and the importance of remote sensing and GIS in India. Other planned events are the role of GIS in air transportation in the Philippines, the potential uses of GIS technology in the medical field in Saudi Arabia, and the use of GIS in the processing and presentation of climatological and meteorological data in the United Kingdom.
"As GIS users continue to demonstrate, the applications of this technology are limited only by the imagination of those who use it," comments Linda Hecht, ESRI's director of marketing. "GIS Day 2000 is a wonderful opportunity to share our knowledge and experiences with the general public."
