Federal and State Agencies initiate program to highlight Watersheds in Georgia
Atlanta, April 21, Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Highway Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and Coastal America, have initiated a Georgia Watershed Signage program at an unveiling of the Tallapoosa Watershed road sign. The event occurred on Highway 27, north of the intersection of Highway 27 and Highway 5 in Carroll County.
Other signs for the Tallapoosa Watershed will be placed on Highway 78, East of Carrollton; Highway 100 at the Polk/Haralson County Line; Highway 120 in Paulding County; Highway 61, East of Carrollton; and Highway 100, South of Bowdon, Georgia. When completed, watershed signs will be placed on state routes within 17 priority-one watersheds in Georgia.
The signage program is designed to raise awareness and encourage good stewardship of the state's valuable rivers, streams, wetlands, lakes, and ground water. A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. They come in all shapes and sizes. Once individuals become aware of and interested in their watershed, they often become more involved in decision-making as well as hands-on protection and restoration efforts. Because watersheds are defined by natural hydrology, they represent the most logical basis for managing water resources.
