IT awareness on the rise in rural areas: MANAGE
THE capacity to absorb information technology is very high in rural areas, particularly among rural women irrespective of literate status, according to Dr V.P. Sharma, Head of Information Technology, National Institute of Agriculture Extension Management (MANAGE).
MANAGE has taken up a number of `cyber-extension' initiatives across the country and so far established Internet connectivity in 24 districts in seven States under the National Agricultural Technology Project.
The two dozen districts are located in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Orissa and Punjab. According to the MANAGE Director-General, Mr A.K. Goel, by the year-end, the institute would be connecting 350 blocks in 28 districts to the Internet. It would also establish call centres at two Universities within the next six months where farmers could get their technical queries answered on toll-free telephone numbers.
Dr Sharma said that the initial response of the rural people towards Internet facilities installed had been very encouraging. According to MANAGE, the experience of these MACTCS has shown that the rural people have been using the Internet in innovative ways.
They are browsing the District Rural Development Agency Web sites for Government programmes and schemes. They are looking for weather forecasts, market prices, job opportunities and news on the Net regularly.
Farmers are also using the Net for getting technical advice online from various sources. They have created their own e-mail accounts and are using this facility for faster communication.
These kiosks have also found a way of earning money by charging for information on results of SSC, Intermediate and the common entrance test for engineering and medical courses.
