Leica Geosystems starts off well in the new fiscal year

In the first quarter of the current fiscal year (April 1 - June 29, 2001), Leica Geosystems' sales revenues increased 42.6% to CHF 203.3 million; EBITDA rose 42.9% to CHF 28.0 million. Today, Leica Geosystems is one of the world's most comprehensive suppliers of survey technologies and of 3D image-processing software. Leica Geosystems' products and services are used for the capture, visualization and modeling of spatial data, for example, in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Korean Small Firms to Get Net Help
About one million small firms will be aided by the Korean government to adopt information technology in their businesses, the information ministry said Tuesday.
"We are drawing up plans to support single-proprietor businesses such as supermarkets and small companies with less than 10 employees to enhance productivity by grafting on e-business," a senior official at the Ministry of Information and Communication said.
The million-business target will be reached by 2004, the ministry official said, adding that the project should also boost the depressed information technology industry.
The government has concentrated on supporting medium-size companies and technology start-ups capitalize on information technology so far. Small-business support has been scarce in this area, the official said.
The information ministry met with high-speed Internet operators, including Korea Telecom; software leasing companies, management information software developers and information technology education institutes to discuss how to aid the "informatization" of small companies.
The ministry said it called for information companies and institutes which can help develop the project to form a consortium to develop low-priced Internet software products that small enterprises can use.
The package of products suggested by the ministry would be comprised of broadband Internet services, point-of-sale management software and accounting software, and will be offered to small enterprises at about 60,000 won ($46) to 70,000 won a month.

Japanese Enterprises Bring Mobile E-Commerce Innovations to the World Stage
Japanese enterprises are creating a business based on mobile telephony that is unprecedented in the world, according to Cybird Co., Ltd., a Web contents provider for mobile phones.
"What we're doing could bring about a flip conventional business logic," a company spokesman said. "The plans of many of the enterprises that want to be listed on our official menu lack originality. They need some element of interest that doesn't just replicate an existing service."
At present, mobile e-commerce based on Internet access services for mobile phones, like i-mode and EZweb, is separating into two different waves. The first consists of ambitious moves on the part of Japanese enterprises to become world trend setters in creating new businesses based on made-in-Japan mobile infrastructure. The other consists of opportunistic moves to jump on the bandwagon and run businesses that simply copy forerunner companies' services.
The Japanese companies that paved the way in mobile e-commerce are still creating new business without precedent anywhere in the world. The business of selling the i-mode infrastructure is not the only pace-setter coming out of Japan.
