Japan may delay H-2A rocket launch - again
Japan may postpone the launch of its new H-2A rocket, scheduled for this weekend, after discovering problems with a valve in the rocket, an official said Monday.
The National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) said the rocket valve used for adjusting oxygen had failed to function properly and it was waiting for a plane to take the defective part back to a production center in Nagoya, central Japan.
While downplaying the mechanical trouble, NASDA blamed the massive Typhoon Pabuk which was headed for western Japan, including the launch site, for a possible delay.
"Tanegashima is so far away from Nagoya," agency spokesman Yoichi Fujita said, referring to the launch site on Tanegashima island, about 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) southwest of Tokyo.
"But because of the typhoon we cannot fly an airplane from Nagoya to Tanegashima," he said.
The scheduled launch, originally set for August 25, was now in doubt, the spokesman said. "We cannot say when we will launch the rocket."
The H-2A rocket is a potential rival to Europe's Arianespace Ariane V.

China now world's biggest mobile market
HONG KONG, China -- According to China's telecom authorities, there were 120.6 million mobile subscribers in China at the end of July, rivaling the U.S. as the world market leader.
The mobile phone market attracted about 3.8 million new subscribers in July, according to the Ministry of Information Industry.
The surge in new subscribers pushes China into the position of the biggest mobile phone market in the world.
According to the U.S. Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association Web site, there are 120.1 million cellular phone users in the United States -- about 500,000 less than in China.
"Mobile phone users have grown faster than fixed-line users in China, by a long shot," said the MII spokesman.
The number of fixed-line subscribers in China grew by about 2.4 million during July to reach 166.8 million, he added.
