Maps help international project touring Australia

AUSLIG is sponsoring the Overland Australia segment of a 10 year international project which is attempting the first circumnavigation of the world using only human power. The project, Expedition 360, promotes environmental responsibility and cross-cultural understanding through school exchange programs, and encourages young people to learn from each other and to live fully and enjoy the experience. A team of eight riders began the Overland Australian section of the circumnavigation from Cairns on 24 July 2001. They will ride almost 4000 kilometres on mountain bikes to reach Darwin in approximately 100 days. Team member, Jason Lewis, used AUSLIG's RASTER 250K digital data product to plan the Australian route. On the road, they are using hard copy 1:100 000 scale topographic maps and 1:250 000 NATMAPS which have been provided by AUSLIG in support of the project. AUSLIG has also provided the team with a range of promotional items, which they will be giving to schools along the way.

Singapore Airlines to Offer In-Flight E-Mail Service for Japan Flights

TOKYO-- Singapore Airlines next spring will start an e-mail service for passengers to read and send e-mails during flights.

The service will be available on planes that fly between Singapore and Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Hiroshima.

SIA already started in April 2001 a trial in-flight e-mail service for three flights, one between Singapore and Los Angeles by way of Tokyo, and two flights between Singapore and Chicago. SIA's in-flight e-mail service will be in full scale when all Japan flights are fit with the necessary equipment for the service. This service will be available to all classes of passengers -- economy, business and first class. Passengers can read or send e-mail and browse Web sites by connecting with the satellite through the antenna box installed on top of each aircraft.

SIA will provide a LAN connecting cable and power supply (for economy class, LAN connecting cable only). Passengers must bring their own mobile information devices, like notebook PCs. The SIA has been actively working on the construction of in-flight IT infrastructures so that the e-mail and Internet connection services will become available.
