French national mapping agency opts for Cadcorp SIS to maintain UK maps

IGN France International (IGN-FI), the French National Mapping Agency subsidiary for IGN overseas activities, has selected Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System software as the software tool for the data revision of Ordnance Survey Topo '96 digital map data.

When the Ordnance Survey recently issued an open tender for the maintenance of their Topo '96 data, it came as no surprise that IGN-FI would bid for the project. Using Cadcorp SIS Map Editor and a Cadcorp developed CITF Translator, IGN-FI won a significant portion of this important project, namely responsibility for 3,200 map sheets. This first order is for 10 software licences.

With the help of both IGN-FI and the OS, Cadcorp managed to quickly develop a CITF translator to match OS specifications and validation techniques. This allowed IGN-FI to complete the first pilot stage of the project swiftly and successfully. The pilot stage of the project involved importing the CITF topographical and attribute data into Cadcorp SIS Map Editor product for editing. The ease of use is a significant feature of Cadcorp software and its capability to read and view native format data prior to translation helped IGN-FI to determine areas of modification before translation and allowed them to plan their maintenance routines.

IGN-FI is also attracted to Cadcorp by its ability to be customised easily using Visual Basic. Claude Yvon of Geomod, Cadcorp's reseller partner in France, impressed IGN-FI and the OS, by showing how easy data maintenance can be performed by using Geomod's customised interface that allows quick and simple editing and modification.

Cadcorp SIS ASC (Active Server Component) extends the functionality of Cadcorp SIS for use over the Internet or a company-wide intranet.
