U.S. Census Bureau counts on expertise from ESRI
A $2.85 million purchase order from the agency calls on ESRI to supply ArcGIS and other software products for deployment throughout the agency. An additional $600,000 services contract provides for on-site support and consulting throughout many divisions within the agency.
Other U.S. Census Bureau awards to ESRI include training and software involving a full week-by-week training plan and Virtual Campus subscriptions over the next two years for U.S. Census Bureau employees.
ESRI, together with IBM, has also been an instrumental player on the American FactFinder project. The bureau released the American FactFinder on the Internet in March 1999. This project involves a comprehensive multiyear development effort to build a data dissemination system that provides public access to demographic and economic information. The project is based on ESRI's ArcIMS technology, which provides users with browsing, searching, and mapping capabilities.
According to Rick Ayers, federal account manager for ESRI-Washington, D.C., by developing customized tools for analyzing and quality assurance in ESRI's ArcGIS, the U.S. Census Bureau is improving the accuracy of its data and the value of its database. "The efficiencies that they gain from using our commercial off-the-shelf products will give them the time and resources to devote toward their core business," says Ayers.
