GARMIN Announces Low-Cost Fixed-Mount Marine GPS with WAAS
OLATHE, Kan., Feb 26, Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. a leading manufacturer of navigation, communication and information electronics, has unveiled a new fixed-mount GPS for the marine market - The GPS 152.
The GPS 152 is a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver loaded with a database of worldwide cities and U.S. nautical navigation aids such as lights, buoys, sound signals, day beacons and tide data. Built-in memory of one megabyte makes the GPS 152 compatible with GARMINŐs MapSource Points of Interest CD for waypoint and route management.
In addition to larger memory, the GPS 152 is compatible with the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), a technology designed to improve the accuracy of GPS positioning to about three meters.
"The GPS 152 is a full-feature marine navigation product that will be at home on any boat," said Gary Kelley, director of marketing, GARMIN International. "Combine that with the fact that we've added WAAS capability, and you have a product that will keep mariners on track to their destination, even in the worst visibility conditions."
On the outside, the GPS 152 comes housed in a waterproof case that's about four inches high and five inches wide. A large four-inch diagonal, high-contrast display features 100x160 pixels for the ultimate in readability. A simple keypad at the bottom of the unit makes entering information easy, without blocking your view of the display.
Specific features of the GPS 152 include:
- WAAS capable for GPS accuracy to approximately three meters
- Built-in database of worldwide cities, U.S. tide data and U.S. nautical navigation aids such as lights, buoys, sound signals and day beacons
- One megabyte of internal storage capacity; accepts downloadable points of interest detail from MapSource Points of Interest CD
- Dedicated man overboard function
- Built-in celestial tables show sun and moon by date and position
- Large four-inch diagonal, high-contrast display with 100x160 pixels
- Stores 500 waypoints and 20 routes
- Waterproof to IPX7 standards; can withstand immersion in one meter of water for 30 minutes
- Loran TDs
The GPS 152 is expected to be available in March at a suggested retail price of $364.27 with an internal antenna and $388.56 with an external antenna. The unit will ship standard with a mount, cover, power data cable, user's manual and quick reference guide.
