    Titan Launches USAF Milstar Satellite

A Titan 4B successfully launched a U.S. Air Force Milstar 2-2 satellite from Cape Canaveral, LC 40, at 2120 UTC (1:20 p.m. PST) on February 27. The classified satellite will be stationed at 90°W, inclined 4.5 degrees.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems is the prime contractor for theUS$750 million 4537 kg (10,000 lbm) military satellite communications system. The satellite system provides the U.S. Department of Defense with reliable, secure, jam-proof communications between fixed-site, mobile, and portable terminals.

Milstar communicates via terminals that are compatible among all the military services, including shipborn, man-portable, vehicle-mounted and carried in command and control aircraft. Each terminal transmits and receives voice and data in the Extremely High Frequency and Super High Frequency spectrum. The low data rate payload is designed to transmit voice, data and fax information at 75 bits per second (bps) to 2400 bps. The medium data payload, making its debut on the first Milstar II spacecraft will be able to transmit 1.5 Mega bps.
