Dr. D.P.Rao, Director, NRSA, India, awarded Padma Shri
Dr. D.P.Rao, Director, National Remote Sensing Agency, Department of Space, Govt. of India has been selected for the prestigeous award Padma Shri. He has been awarded for the Science and Engineering category.
Dr. D.P.Rao, Director, National Remote Sensing Agency, Department of Space, Govt. of India, received the M.Sc. degree in Geology from the Jabalpur University, Jabalpur, India. in 1960, a Post Graduate Diploma in Photo-interpretation from the Indian Photo-interpretation Institute, Dehra Dun in 1968. He was sent on Netherlands Govt. Fellowship to international Institute for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC), Enschede, The Netherlands in 1973 for advanced studies and obtained M.Sc., degree in Aerial Sensing in Geomorphology.
He undertook a special training in satellite remote sensing from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in 1975. His research work on Neotectonics in Sub-Himalayan belt has earned him the Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Mines, Dhanbad, India in 1985.
He has specialised in remote sensing applications in Earth Sciences, namely, geology, geohydrology and geomorphohgy. He has done extensive mapping for oil exploration and has wide experience in coastal geo-morphology, integrated surveys for sustainable development and GIS application. He had served as Exploration Geologist at CNI and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), as Professor (Geomorphology) Head, Consultancy Division at IIRS, Dehra Dun before coming to NRSA.
He is a fellow of Natonal Academy of Sciences (F.N.A.Sc.), A.P.Academy of Sciences, Gelogical Society of India, Association of Exploration Geophysicists, Indian GeophysicalUnion, lnstitution of Engineers (India) and Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS); Chairman, Working Group VII/2 on Application of Remote Sensing and GlS for Sustainable Development of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS).
He was the President, Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Indian Geophysical Union, and Association of Exploration Geophysicists. In addition, he was also member of the Indian delegation to ESCAP during September-October, 1993 for a meeting on sustainable development; and consultant to RITES. He attended the meeting of ASEAN Experts Group in Remote Sensing in Bangkok in June 1997. Recently he has been a member of the Indian Delegate to UNISPACE-III Conference held at Vienna, Austria.
Dr. Rao received the Gold Medal Award in recognition of his contribution to identification and mapping of wastelands at district level and IMSD project in 1996 from the Soil Conservation Society of India, CHEMTECH + ORD Award-1985 for delivering the best talk on remote sensing applications for oil exploration and the Burhani Foundation Award for outstanding contribution in the area of Remote Sensing and Natural Resource Management in 1997. Received award for best oral presentation by International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing at the ECO BP98 ISPRS Commission VLI Symposium held at Budapest, Hungary. He edited a book titled "Remote Sensing for Earth Resources".
