EROS A1 demonstrated its ability to distinguish ground objects of 1 metre

TEL AVIV, Israel - The Israeli-made camera on the ImageSat International (ISI) EROS A1 satellite appears to be functioning properly and has already demonstrated its ability to distinguish ground objects 1 meter (yard) across, according to industry officials here.

In a Dec. 11 statement, Elop Electro-Optical Industries of Rehovot, Israel, announced that Eros A1 has begun transmitting images following its launch into polar orbit Dec. 5. According to Elop, the satellite's digital camera is operating as intended, and is capable of producing images with 1.8-meter to 1-meter resolution.

Elop, a subsidiary of Haifa, Israel-based Elbit Systems Ltd., said the camera aboard EROS A1 is based on technology developed for the Ofeq series of Israeli military spy satellites. Moreover, the company noted in its statement that Elop is providing similar capabilities for the South Korean space agency for that country's imaging satellite program.

Elop's parent company owns 9.4 percent of ISI, the Cyprus-based firm managing the EROS imaging satellite program.
