ESRI announces "2001 Education User Conference"
Redlands, California-ESRI will hold its 2001 Education User Conference July 6-8, 2001, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Diego, California. The education event offers three days of presentations, hands-on workshops, and other activities tailored to persons interested in all aspects of geographic information system (GIS) technology in education including school educators, university instructors and administrators, and library and museum staff.
This event immediately precedes the 2001 ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, which facilitates attendance at both events.
"Over the past decade, ESRI has seen the number of its users in education and related areas swell," said Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI. "Some do make it to our annual international conference, but we would like to see many more join us in San Diego. To facilitate this, we have created a tailored education conference. I would like to extend my personal invitation to these users around the world who are propelling GIS into new areas. I hope they will come to share their stories with us and each other."
"The ESRI education conference is directed to users of GIS who work in the areas of instruction, research, or administration," said Charlie Fitzpatrick, ESRI schools and libraries program manager. "This event allows people interested in bringing GIS to education and public access areas to connect with peers. It is designed for persons at all levels of GIS expertise," said Fitzpatrick.
Each track will have many user presentations. School topics will include GIS in elementary and secondary school teaching, curricular material development, school mapping and bus routing, and techniques for integrating technologies.
The higher education track will cover issues such as GIS course content and implementation, lab resources and needs, GIS articulation agreements, and development of new course materials. For libraries, museums, and other places of public access and education, the conference will look at how libraries are becoming digital data repositories as well as other subjects such as bringing maps to exhibits, spatial information access, market research for public institutions, and Web and desktop mapping for patrons. While tracks will encourage focus on topics of special interest to educators, professional staff, or administrators, many sessions will foster crossover interactions among attendees.
Other presentations also will appeal to the range of attendees: communitywide mapping projects, facilities planning and management, emergency preparedness and safety, and the Geography Network.
ESRI will host sessions and hands-on workshops including introductions to ArcGIS, migration from ArcView GIS 3 to ArcView 8, and working with ArcView Spatial Analyst/ModelBuilder, ArcIMS, remote sensing, and ArcVoyager. All these events will be included in the conference registration fee and will focus on GIS use in education settings.
Special Registration Fee
The education user conference includes special registration pricing that allows education conferees to attend all or part of the main ESRI International User Conference for little or no additional fees. The registration cost for the three-day 2001 Education User Conference is $250 (U.S.). This fee also permits registered education conferees to attend the first two days of the annual ESRI International User Conference at no extra cost. If the attendees would like to register for both conferences, a special fee of $495 (U.S.) will apply.
"Having this education event right before the general ESRI International User Conference allows education participants to spend time with the main body of ESRI users, learn about new tools and developments, explore the exhibits, and get help with technical problems," Fitzpatrick added.
