GPS, PDA, Mobile GIS Devices to have larger secondary storage: Toshiba's 2.5-inch 30 MB HDD

IRVINE, Calif.--Jan. 22, 2001-- Toshiba America Electronics Components announced its newest family of industry-leading 2.5-inch hard disk drives in 15GB and 30GB capacities, offering the industry's highest areal density per platter at 26.7 gigabits per square inch.

The new line of HDDs provides higher-capacity storage options for a range of mobile PC and non-PC applications like Geographical positioning Systems, PDAs, etc.

"Our new generation of super-slim 2.5-inch HDDs enables computer users to keep pace with the latest applications and computer functionality, while maintaining portability," said Amy Lian, director of Toshiba's HDD business unit. "Today's market requires 2.5-inch HDD technology that offers an increasingly mobile society the ability to use complex data, business graphics and audio visual applications, as well as digital photos, music and video in a mobile environment."

Storage Products for the New Economy
Toshiba's new 30GB (MK3017GAP) and 15GB (MK1517GAP) HDDs are 9.5mm high with interfaces that are ATA-5 compliant to support high transfer rates of 100 megabytes per second. Both the 15GB and 30GB HDDs can withstand an operational shock of up to 175g and non-operating shock of up to 800g.

At 30GB, Toshiba's new family offers enough capacity for portable video recording and editing, with lower power consumption compared with traditional 3.5-inch HDDs. This functionality provides ideal storage for a range of commercial and consumer notebooks, as well as non-PC applications such as PDAs, printers, copiers, GPS and MP3 players.

Toshiba achieved this industry-leading per platter areal density using proprietary technology that provides greater capability for reading information on the drive. This rugged design and reliability has enabled Toshiba to deliver the right capacities to meet today's diverse range of storage needs for both commercial and consumer PC applications, as well as the full range of non-PC applications.

Toshiba SDD will begin shipping samples of the 30GB MK3017GAP and 15GB MK1517GAP HDDs in January 2001.
