  • Remote Sensing Ground Station Project for Egypt [ 31/01/2001 ]
    Republic of Egypt's National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Science (NARSS) has begun the hardware integration and testing of ground station project. This ground station will be able to acquire and record data from the SPOT constellation, as well as ERS-2 and LANDSAT-7 satellites, with an upgrade path to easily add additional satellites in the future.


  • Boeing Delta II rocket lifts Air Force Navigational Satellite into orbit [ 31/01/2001 ]
    A Boeing Delta II rocket fired up the night sky to launch a Global Positioning System (GPS) navigational satellite into space. Liftoff occurred at 2:43 a.m. EST. Twenty-five minutes later, the satellite was placed into an elliptical orbit almost 11,000 miles above the Earth.


  • NanoTime: A precision network synchronization system [ 30/01/2001 ]
    NanoTime is a GPS based time synchronization component for computer networks (IP) and telecommunication networks. It provides a consistent, long-term, non drifting, network synchronization in time increments as small as single digit microseconds.


  • GPS in the use of oil spill monitoring [ 29/01/2001 ]
    The Jessica, a bulk carrier sank off the Galapagos Islands a week ago. The vessel was transporting 900,000 litres of diesel, of which about 144,000 litres spilled into the sea. This spill has threatened the unique eco-system of the Galapagos Islands. GPS is being used to monitor the oil spill and preventive measures are being taken accordingly.

    EarthScan Network Inc. announced the introduction of a new web site designed to address the emerging technologies and data now available in the EarthScan product line. Among the new additions to the EarthScan online services is five-meter panchromatic data.


  • First ever high-precision GPS reading of Vinson summit: Highest Peak of Antarctica, obtained [ 27/01/2001 ]
    On January 14, NOVA's eight-member expedition team successfully pioneered a new route to the summit of Vinson Massif--the highest peak in Antarctica. Height of this peak was measured at 16,067 feet, using high-precision GPS readings for the very first time.


  • Boeing Delta II Rocket poised to place U.S. Air Force Satellite into orbit [ 27/01/2001 ]
    On Tuesday, Jan. 30, Boeing Delta II will take off from Air Force launching pad of Florida, and after twenty-five minutes it will place a GPS satellite into the orbit.


  • First high-resolution satellite image released of Maha Kumbh Mela, world's largest human gatheringh [ 25/01/2001 ]
    Space Imaging's IKONOS satellite has taken a detailed color photograph of the largest human gathering in the history of the world, the Maha Kumbh Mela, a spiritual event held every 144 years in Northern India.

    Organised by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, the conference will highlight opportunities in Asia, for U.S. companies involved in GIS and related geospatial products and services. Government and infrastructure projects valued at $1 billion will be featured in Asia Geospatial Technology Conference to be held during February 12-14, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

    A new technology enabling transit system consumers direct Internet access to information about the location and arrival time of the vehicle they wish to board.. This technology has been developed by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Research program at the University of Washington.
