Kerala Agriculture University develops a new GIS based application on LIS
Centre for Environment and Development (CED), an autonomous Research & Development institute of GIS in Kerala,is now going to steer the Land Information System (LIS) development of Kerala. The Geoinformatics group of CED has developed a complete customized and user-friendly LIS software based on the studies on coconut farming in Vallikunnon Grama Panchayat of Alappuzha district in Kerala. This work was done as a follow up of the "Comprehensive Coconut Care Programme" of Alappuzha district launched by Kerala Agricultural University. This programme had conducted a comprehensive survey of each and every survey plots and coconut trees in every plots of Vallikuinnon panchayat. The other major details collected includes plot characteristics such as area of plot, ownership of plot, type of house, type of soil, soil properties, drainage system, irrigation facility, major crops and trees, details of fertilizer and pesticide applied along with a complete database of each coconut tree that includes type, age, yield, height, health status, disease status, regeneration capacity and details of fertilizer applied for each plant.
The detailed field mapping of each plots in the panchayat was carried out by the Resource Analysis Wing of CED, in the scale 1:1000 clearly indicating the plot boundaries, location and area occupied by house, other built up structures in the plot, wells / ponds, and all trees and crop areas in the plot. The GIS software used was ARC/INFO 7.2.1. The software which is yet to be named will be released in February, 2001, by Dr. Pathiyoor Gopinath, Pro-vice Chancellor of Kerala Agricultural University, in the presence of Dr, Babu Ambat, Director, CED at Thiruvananthapuram. This will be first released LIS software of Kerala and is expected to serve as a model for LIS development of Kerala.
