  • GPS, PDA, Mobile GIS Devices to have larger secondary storage: Toshiba's 2.5-inch 30 MB HDD [ 23/01/2001 ]
    Toshiba announced its newest family of 2.5-inch hard disk drives in 15GB and 30GB capacities, offering the industry's highest areal density per platter at 26.7 gigabits per square inch. The new line of HDD provides higher-capacity storage options for a range of mobile PC and non-PC applications like Geographical positioning Systems, PDAs, etc.


  • SOLIDWORKS 2001: A Windows-based 3D mechanical design software released by Solidworks [ 23/01/2001 ]
    SolidWorks 2001 offers major enhancement in the area of user interaction, sheet metal creation, feature and part development, assembly design tools, drawing performance, and Internet collaboration tools. It is a Windows-based 3D mechanical design software.

    In a smart device application contest organised by devicetop.com, Car Angel selected for the grand prize. Car Angel is an application equipped with a GPS helps drivers to find a location, to find the nearest gas station and fast food restaurant or to track past car movements.


  • ImageSat International reveals first images from EROS A-1 satellite [ 22/01/2001 ]
    EROS A-1 has completed the first phase of In Orbit testing with all systems and sub-systems equaling or exceeding anticipated performance specifications, and has started sending high resolution imageries.


  • European Space Agency selected Ariane 5 to launch its communications testbed satellite Artemis [ 22/01/2001 ]
    Artemis is now scheduled for launch as a co-passenger with Insat 3C in late summer. Artemis was originally scheduled for launch on a Japanese H-2A rocket. The completed satellite is in storage, awaiting shipment to the launch site.


  • Meltdown: Satellites show accelerated Polar ice threat [ 22/01/2001 ]
    Vast sheets of ice on the warming fringes of Antarctica may be on the verge of collapse and could eventually release rivers of ice that would cause sea levels worldwide to rise more rapidly than expected, according to new study of satellite images released Tuesday.


  • Galileo, Europe's global satellite navigation system, in the making [ 20/01/2001 ]
    At present satellite navigation users in Europe have no alternative other than to take their positions from US GPS or Russian GLONASS satellites. Galileo will provide European navigators with an independent system.


  • Airbiquity and Televigation announce availability of first GPS-Enabled Voice- Activated Location Application for Wireless Users [ 20/01/2001 ]
    This application enables location services, such as traffic reports, turn-by-turn driving directions and nearby business searches, based on the actual position of the user. This GPS-enabled voice-activated application will be unveiled at the Upside Showcase in Palm Springs, CA on January 22-24.


  • Hyperion sending data to Earth; NASA's first Hyperspectral Imager On-Orbit [ 20/01/2001 ]
    Hyperion is NASA's first hyperspectral imager to become operational on-orbit. One and a half months after its launch aboard NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) spacecraft, the Hyperion hyperspectral imager is transmitting images of the Earth's surface to ground stations around the world.

    The TravelEyes satellite receiver gathers and stores GPS (Global Positioning System) signals, showing the exact locations visited by the vehicle, time on site, speeds en route, and the time the vehicle left each location. Used with its mapping and reports software, the device tracks miles driven on a daily basis, maintains a timelog and produces comprehensive reports on all travel activities.

  • R2V version 5.0.7h released by Able Software [ 19/01/2001 ]
    In this new release, R2V added a new function to convert 1-bit monochrome black/white image to 8-bit greyscale. For an 8-bit greyscale image, advanced image processing functions, such as smoothing, filtering, thresholding and noise removal can be applied.


  • KOREM releases PUSH'N'SEE 3.1: The newest version of Web-mapping software for MapInfo users. [ 18/01/2001 ]
    Push'n'See3.1 has been developed to meet the GIS and mapping needs of companies and public organizations using MapInfo Professional. Push'n'See, written in Java, will enhance the publication and communication of interactive maps over the Internet.


  • DMTI Spatial releases CanMap vr - 4.1 [ 17/01/2001 ]
    CanMap V4.1 now includes transit systems in these key urban centres across Canada. And is supported by the availability of street names for communities as small as 1,000 people, CanMap V4.1 also includes street addressing for communities as small as 4,500 people.


  • China's unmanned spacecraft returns safely  [ 16/01/2001 ]
    China's unmanned Shenzhou II spacecraft returned safely to Earth on 16th January


  • First GSLV to be launched in February by INDIA  [ 16/01/2001 ]
    Scientists and engineers are working round-the-clock preparing for the launch of the first Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) any day between or February 25 and 28. The GSLV will be used for placing communication satellites of the INSAT class into orbit.


  • NASA delays Atlantis Shuttle launch to February  [ 16/01/2001 ]
    The space agency had planned to launch Atlantis on Friday, but mission managers grew worried about the solid-fuel booster rockets strapped to either side of the large, external fuel tank mounted on the shuttle's back during liftoff. Hence they decided to postpone it for now.


  • RIM Imaging: A new technology on the ramp  [ 16/01/2001 ]
