Work begins on China dams
Work began in China on a new dam which will become the second-largest in Asia after the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. The 24.3 billion yuan Longtan Hydroelectric Station, will provide much-needed clean energy for China's fast- growing province of Guangdong.
The new dam at Longtan is designed to harness the Hongshui River that flows into the massive Pearl River delta region near Hong Kong. While critics point to this and several other mega projects as environmental vandalism, the Chineses authorities say they need vast amounts of power to fuel the country's economic growth and give their people a much better standard of living. The Hongshui Dam should come on line in 2007, by which time it's hoped several other under-utilised power projects can be linked so as to get the power to where it's most needed
Manage R&D Funds By Being More Sympathetic Towards Scientists
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said research and development funds should be managed in a way that will be more sympathetic towards the scientists involved in the R&D programme.
Nevertheless he acknowledged that it would be indeed difficult to evaluate an idea and the aim of the study, saying probably most of it would not yield anything.
"However when the research study brings about good results, the returns from the earlier funding will be immense," he said when launching the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment here.
Philippine Volcano Erupts
The 8,000-feet Mayon began spewing truck-sized rocks and flaming ash a week ago, forcing more than 41,000 villagers to flee the area. Vulcanologists warned of more explosive eruptions in the days ahead.
Villagers started returning to their homes in the vicinity of the mountain despite the danger, complaining of appalling health conditions at evacuation centers.
A four-mile radius is considered as no-man's land and five-mile radius the danger zone.
