Department of Conservation releases "California Minerals and Mines" On CD-Rom

"California Minerals and Mines," a CD containing approximately 1,000 photographs and descriptions just released by the California Department of Conservation, is an important tool for teachers, students and "rock hounds" alike. The DOC/Division of Mines and Geology's library staff developed this interactive CD. The mineral photographs are accompanied by information about physical properties, classification, chemical formulas, crystal structure, specimen descriptions and uses. The CD also includes historical and current photographs of selected California mines. Users may search by mine or mineral name, mineral classification and uses, and county. Features include a slide show that presents the photos at 10-second intervals, a glossary, articles about mineral and rock collecting, a section about mining and reclamation, and mineral quizzes.

GIS Tools releases TGR2SHP 4.1
GIS Tools is pleased to announce the release of TGR2SHP version 4.1. This new version will handle TIGER versions from 1994 to the soon to be released TIGER 2000. Included in the new version are new output organization options, including a merge-on-the-fly option for combining shapes from multiple counties during translation. In addition to the merge-on-the-fly option, outputs can be organized by county, by theme, or all shapes can be written to a single directory. Popular functions such as automatic unzipping, layer control options, water clipping, and the ability to process many counties in a single run are still available. TGR2SHP sells for $99. Census Bureau selects SRC for technology to distribute Census2000 Data

The US Bureau of the Census has tapped SRC, LLC, of Orange, Calif., to provide advanced data compression technology and software to facilitate publication and distribution of Census2000 summary files on CD-ROM and DVD over the next three years. With SRC's technology, the bureau achieves its primary goal: to effectively manage a data set seven times larger than the 1990 census while increasing accessibility for more users. The award of task statement ITS-102 marks the first time the bureau has chosen a commercially available geodemographic software application for distribution of census data. In addition, data will be available on the block level, which has increased the volume of statistics by more than seven times 1990 census levels.

Syncline to Exhibit At ESRI Users Conference, Showcasing MapCiti

Syncline, Inc., has announced it will exhibit at the ESRI International User's Conference, showcasing MapCiti(TM), the company's pioneering online mapping service. The conference is being held at the San Diego Convention Center, July 9-13. The company's chief technology officer, Raj Singh, is scheduled to speak at the event on the topic of e-government and online mapping services. Indian wins prestigious world technology award
London: An Indian has won a prestigious world technology award for an experimental project that takes the benefits of information technology (IT) to poor fishermen.
Venkatramann Balaji of ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics) in Andhra Pradesh led a project to bring the benefits of IT to 15 fishing villages near
Pondicherry.
The award was among 23 given out at the end of a two-day summit of the World Technology Network held at the Science Museum in London.

ESRI Award for AP Govt. for Geographic Information System (GIS)
New Delhi July 4, 2001: The Government of Andhra Pradesh will receive a special achievement award for adopting and successfully implementing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the State. This award from ESRI Inc., USA is given to the best user sites from around the world in recognition of their outstanding work in the GIS field. Mr. Jack Dangermond, President ESRI and renowned GIS guru has invited Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Mr Chandrababu Naidu to receive this Special Achievement GIS award at a special ceremony at San Diego, USA in July 2001. Indian Software Pros a Hot Commodity In Germany
Indian Software specialists seem to be the most vaunted commodity in the German market with the demand outstripping supply, and every fifth software pro invited to the Republic being an Indian. Data just released by the Nuremberg-based Federal Labor office reveal Indian Software Professionals have bagged the largest chunk of infotech jobs in Germany. They account for 1,624 green cards or 21 per cent of the 7,841 cards issued to software experts under a scheme launched by the Federal Government to help out local industry reeling under a severe shortage of IT specialists. The next highest number of emigre software specialists comes from Russian, Ukrainian and Baltic states, whose combined strength was a mere 1,107.
