A team of NOAA ocean scientists and partners exploring the uncharted depths of an underwater canyon off Oregon has discovered new species of invertebrates and taken images of never-before-seen geological features of Astoria Canyon, found off the mouth of the Columbia River.
Scientists used sidescan and multibeam sonars in an earlier cruise in June and on the NOAA research vessel, Ronald H. Brown, to create new 3-dimensional, high-resolution images of Astoria Canyon that clearly depict never before seen features of walls, outcrops, rocks, faults, and slides. The team also conducted biological, chemical, physical and geological surveys of the canyon using a variety of remote sensing and sampling devices and a sophisticated remotely operated vehicle from Canada, capable of diving to 5,000 meters for more than 24 hours at a time.

Amelia Earhart Plane Possibly Spotted By Satellite

The wreckage of Amelia Earhart's ditched-at-sea aircraft may have been found. High-resolution satellite imagery of Nikumaroro Island in the southwest Pacific has detected what may be remains of the plane resting in water within a coral atoll. Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Frederick Noonan, disappeared in 1937 during an attempt to fly around the world. The disappearance of the flyers set off a massive sea and air search, personally ordered by then U.S. President Roosevelt. Despite a tremendous search effort, no physical evidence of the aviators nor their plane was ever found. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) in Wilmington, Delaware, is mounting an expedition next month to help solve the 64-year old mystery and find Earhart's plane. This time, the team is armed with imagery taken by Space Imaging's Ikonos 2 satellite. Five earlier expeditions to the remote island have recovered artifacts, suspected of being from the lost flight.

TerraSim Links Urban Visualization With GIS Query at ESRI User Conference
TerraSim, Inc., BAE SYSTEMS, and ITspatial LLC, have demonstrated the capability for end-to-end geospatial data capture, automated 3D visual database construction, and real-time interaction between the visual database and a fully correlated GIS database at Booth 115, BAE SYSTEMS, at the 21st Annual ESRI International User Conference. BAE SYSTEMS' SOCET SET® photogrammetric workstation was used to capture key downtown 3D building models with photo-realistic textures and 2D building footprints, as well as accurate locations for important urban features such as street signs, fire hydrants, and trees. TerraSim's 3D urban visualization product, TerraTools®, was then employed to compose a variety of cartographic source data formats into a high-fidelity visual database, including the SOCET SET data ingested as models, San Diego GIS (SanGIS) vector parcel and landuse GIS data as ESRI Shapefiles, and Bentley MicroStation levels for utility placement.

The two men in Agra who will guard the Guest
HE is not your conventional cop. At 29, Navneet Sekera, who is SP (Technical) in Lucknow, is an engineer who learnt his skills at Roorkee and IIT. He then went on to work on the Global Positioning System (GPS) Navigation to track vehicles on a digital map anywhere in the world.
Now he has been entrusted with the equally exciting job of ensuring General Pervez Musharraf’s safety at Amar Vilas Hotel, along with older colleague Anand Swaroop.
He and Swaroop are busy checking out the hotel officials and instructing a dozen-odd intelligence officials. With a slight tinge of regret, Sekera says the GPS ‘‘could have been used for the security arrangements in Agra’’. He explains that it’s sometimes difficult to control a long fleet of cars, a task that GPS makes quite easy.
The system is being used for a pilot project in Noida, Seva 100, for the past three months. It increases the efficiency in answering calls at the police control room since it gives the exact location of the caller and the patrol van on digital maps.
