Laser-Scan, in association with the AGI Conference, has launched GIS in Action, an interactive web service designed to help GIS 2001 visitors to find out what's going on around the event. Following the success of the service at GIS 2000, GIS in Action (accessed from the GIS 2001 website) is now packed with even more information on where to go and what to do than ever before. GIS in Action displays a map of the area surrounding GIS 2001 and extends across the whole of London. Visitors can easily navigate around the map to find anything from train stations and tourist attractions to pubs and restaurants. A single mouse-click displays relevant information about particular items along with useful links, for example, clicking on GIS 2001 gives information about getting to Earls Court along with links to the GIS 2001 website and the Earls Court & Olympia website. The service also includes a powerful search facility to help visitors to find a specific address.

Leading US cartographer charts visit to Ordnance Survey

The national mapping agencies of Britain and the United States are set for closer links with the secondment to Ordnance Survey of one of America's leading cartographers. Pamela Malam, who is working here until October, is the deputy director for the eastern region of the US Geological Survey (USGS). She oversees all territory east of the Mississippi, some 26 states in all. Her visit is intended to draw parallels between recent e-business strategies adopted by both organisations, and could lead to more sharing of expertise. The secondment was arranged after Ordnance Survey Director General Vanessa Lawrence gave a presentation to USGS directors in Washington DC in January. The secondment comes as Ordnance Survey prepares for the November launch of its seamless georeferencing base, the Digital National Framework (DNF), the foundation for what will be Britain's most detailed and flexible mapping products.

Stadtwerke Dinslaken - Rapid migration to SICAD-UT

In June 2001 utility company Stadtwerke Dinslaken GmbH completed migration of data covering its gas and water networks on schedule. In March 2001 Dinslaken had asked partner companies TESSAG Technische Systeme & Services AG and SICAD GEOMATICS to roll SICAD-UT out and to migrate the network data for these two utility sectors. An attempt had previously been made to migrate network data to a GE Smallworld system. A crucial factor in the decision to opt for SICAD-UT was Stadtwerke Dinslaken's need to be able to securely migrate its databases, which represent a considerable investment in personnel and financial resources. Following the successful activities in the fields of gas and water, this year will also see digital data on the power network covering over 70,000 residents in the company's supply area being input for the first time. In addition, Fernwärmeversorgung Niederrhein GmbH (a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Dinslaken) intends to digitize its district heating networks. SICAD Geomatics GmbH & Co. is devoted exclusively to development, marketing and sales activities for the geographical information system (GIS) SICAD.
