Woolpert to Perform Utility Inventory for Ohio EPA

Woolpert LLP was selected by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to collect the locations of Ohio's 4,200 noncommunity public water system supply wells. The source water protection and assessment program (SWAP) requires Ohio to evaluate these public water systems (PWS).

The Ohio EPA needs an accurate location of each of these wells in order to perform the required assessments. They will use the location information to delineate the PWS protection area and determine the susceptibility for contamination.

All of these locations are being collected on a county-by-county basis using real-time differential Global Positioning System (GPS) survey techniques and a customized version of Woolpert's utility data collection software.

New Product Award for UCLID Software

(Madison, WI) July 16, 2001 - Unique technology clinches prestigious national engineering award for UCLID's mapping software. The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) will present the National New Product Award - Small Company division to UCLID at the annual NSPE conference, July 27 in Detroit, Michigan. UCLID received the Best-of-State Governor's New Product Award - Small Company division from the Wisconsin Society of Professional Engineers (WSPE) in May 2000 and advanced to the national competition.

The NSPE New Product Award program recognizes exceptional engineering research and design as well as a product's impact on the national economy. UCLID's IcoMap software uses a patented Text-to-Vector® technology to read text at any angle and recognize the unique text strings found in legal descriptions, parcel maps and other land records. IcoMap is the only software in the world that can recognize the angled text associated with land measurements.

Converting paper maps, deeds and legal descriptions into digital vector maps is the most tedious, expensive and time-consuming part of establishing a basemap for a Geographic Information System (GIS). Many communities establish a GIS to increase the efficiency of managing geographically related files. A GIS has many uses in county government, helping with tax assessment, zoning and mergency vehicle routing. A county's GIS can also produce valuable mapping information which can be used by public agencies and private sector companies. IcoMap streamlines the conversion process, making it easier and more economical for counties to establish a GIS.

Geologists Explain New Happenings At Kilauea Volcano

In Hawaii, the ground surface subsided abruptly about six weeks ago at Pu`u `O`o, Kilauea Volcano's active cinder-cone vent. Gaping cracks opened around the edges of the subsidence zone, centered on the southwest edge of the cone. A collapse pit about 30 m (100 ft) in diameter and 15 m (50 ft) deep nibbled into the cone's margin. A second collapse pit continues to deepen within the floor of Pu`u `O`o's crater. One large rock slide and several smaller ones ensued. Many of these structures likely formed within a short period of time, perhaps a few hours or a day. The timing of events is uncertain because our view of the site was frequently obscured by the fume cloud that emanates from Pu`u `O`o. Once formed, however, the pits continued to enlarge for a few weeks, because the cinders don't maintain their integrity on oversteepened slopes.
