Motorola and AT&T Wireless First to Deliver GPRS Phone and Service to U.S.

Motorola, a global leader in delivering high-speed data solutions, announced the availability of its Timeport(TM) 7382i, the first General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) handset in North America.

Motorola's Timeport 7382i and AT&T Wireless' new GSM/GPRS network, will be made available to Seattle businesses and will enable users to experience a faster, "always on" connection to the Internet for the first time.

The introduction of GPRS technology in the United States lays the foundation for a gradual evolution to "3G" or third generation wireless technology. GPRS, or 2.5G, is the leading standard being used by GSM network operators to evolve their systems to third generation wireless (3G). GPRS technology provides a fast connection to the Internet, providing the capability for "always on" access. In addition, GPRS technology can offer more efficient and cost effective mobile Internet access because data transmission is sent via packets, and carriers can charge by data sent or retrieved, not airtime incurred.

Motorola's Timeport 7382i, the first GPRS handset commercially available in the United States, provides users with a faster, more efficient connection to the Internet and the ability to switch between data mode and voice calls without interrupting the data session. Additionally, the phone features voice activation, Voice Note voice recorder, a WAP-enabled microbrowser, IrDA connectivity and a data port for connectivity to an external device that does not support IrDA. With Starfish TrueSync(R) software, the Timeport 7382i provides one-step multi-point synchronization with many popular PIM devices, desktop applications and services.

Disasters haunt China's image

Two disasters have hit China within 36 hours, killing scores of people and putting the country's safety record under the spotlight.

Rescue workers are searching for survivors after a Monday blast at a northwestern Chinese village. One hospital source told CNN that nearly 100 people were killed after illegally stored explosives shook a private home early Monday, but official sources say 47 people have been killed. More than 50 people have been wounded and at least a dozen are buried under rubble in China's Shaanxi province, authorities added.

Adding to China's woes, a 600-ton crane collapsed at a Shanghai shipyard on Tuesday, killing at least 22 people, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Shanghai, China's biggest port, is a major center for shipbuilding and repairs. The Hudong yard, opened in 1928, is one of the city's biggest.

China Defies Gravity of Global Slowdown

China's economy grew an enviable 7.9 percent in the second quarter, making it an island of economic strength in a region again facing recession after recovering only briefly from the economic crisis of four years ago. The country is in the midst of a difficult and drawn-out transition from a state-dominated, centrally planned economy to one that relies more on market dynamics. Growth is unevenly distributed throughout the country. And most of the China's economic activity is concentrated in a dozen of its largest cities while huge areas of the countryside - where 900 million people live - are in economic distress if not real recession.

The government itself has spent mightily on public works over the past five years, and continues to pour money into national highways, long-distance railways, oil and gas pipelines and water diversion projects, including one ambitious plan that will reroute water from the Tibetan plateau to the drought-ridden northeast. The government spending is intended to do two things: spur growth and even the growth out by spreading more of it inland.
