China to Launch South Korean Satellite
March 26, Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) is signing a US$16.85 million contract with China to launch a multi-purpose satellite on a Long March rocket. The South Korean satellite, Arirang 2 (Kompsat 2), is scheduled for launch using a Long March 2C rocket in April 2004 from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the Sichuan province.
The US$176 million (228.2-billion won) Arirang 2 remote sensing satellite is being built by Astrium and Electro-Optics Industries (El-Op) on behalf of the Korea Aerospace Industries Association and Daewoo Heavy Industries & Machinery. The satellite will provide images with a 1-meter resolution and multi-spectral images with a 4-meter resolution.
