Houston opts for web based GIS solution for transportation

Houston TranStar recently turned to Applied Technological Services (ATS) and Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions for a Web-based GIS solution to help ease transportation problems over growing concerns about traffic congestion and inadequate agency coordination resulting from area construction projects within the Greater Houston Area. Houston TranStar contracted with ATS to design, develop, and implement a Web-based GIS solution that would allow a member agency to view current and planned construction projects of other member agencies. Their efforts resulted in ROADWORKS, a construction management solution built with Intergraph's GeoMedia WebMap that integrates various GIS data formats and projections from several agencies into a single application. GeoMedia WebMap is the only Web-based map visualization tool that links real time to one or more GIS data warehouses.

Landsat-7 data available online

Beginning with a complete, cloud-free coverage of Germany, Eurimage is now offering Landsat 7 data on-line. A simple, intuitive map interface lets users define their own area of interest, pay with a credit card at just 0.05 per sq. km., and download the data at once. Use of the system is very straightforward: after registering with the site www.eurimage.com, users choose their area of interest on a map of Germany to load the relevant Landsat 7 frame. An innovative virtual window display shows a map in one window and the exactly corresponding part of the image in the other, in real colours (RGB = Bands 3 2 1) or false (Bands 4 5 3). Both the image and the map can be scrolled and zoomed, and synchronised with each other. For the first time, users will be able to make their own selection of their precise area of interest. After checking the image on the monitor they can buy it immediately and download it to their own PC. The minimum dimension of 225 km2 costs just 50 Euro.

Endeavour Safely Lands in California

Shuttle Endeavour with astronauts from the United States, Russia, Canada and Italy aboard, the 110-ton spaceship swooped through crystal clear skies after 186 orbits of Earth, gliding to a 12:11 p.m. EDT (16:11 GMT) touch down at Edwards Air Force Base north of Los Angeles winding up a high-stakes mission to erect a $600 million Canadian robot arm at the International Space Station. The shuttle passed over the southern tip of Australia and then crossed the Pacific Ocean before making landfall over the California coast. Trademark twin sonic booms then echoed, heralding Endeavour's arrival as the ship made a sweeping left turn to line up with the Antelope Valley runway. Forced to forego two landing opportunities due to dismal weather here at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC), the stubby-winged shuttle then rolled to a halt on a concrete runway at the Mojave Desert military base.
