Illinois Senate opens 'Map Room' for public to submit ideas on district lines

Interested in the ideas the general public has about the redrawing Illinois' legislative districts, member of the Illinois Senate Subcommittee on Legislative Reappointment encouraged groups to utilize the Senate's public map room and submit their own plans to the Senate. The public map room is stocked with a high-powered computer, mapping software, 2000 census data and a trained staff person to assist mapmakers. "I encourage groups who have an interest to utilize our public map room or team up with groups who have access to mapping software and submit their ideas to us," said Senator Walter Dudycz, who presided over Monday's hearing. "We are very interested in seeing how various groups want to see the map lines fall." The public access room is located in Room 1004 of the Stratton Office Building in Springfield. The 'Map Room' will be available Monday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 217-782-5441 during those same hours. Members of the Senate Subcommittee include Senate President James 'Pate' Philip (R-Wooddale), and Senators Dudycz (R-Chicago), Frank Watson (R-Greenville), Emil Jones (D-Chicago) and Vince Demuzio (D-Carlinville).

LocatioNet release free comprehensive interface for developing LBS

LocatioNet Systems 2000 has released its free comprehensive application protocol interface (API) book, opening the door to developers interested in designing location-specific applications and services.LocatioNet provides a technology platform for wireless location-based services. Their API booklet allows both application and content developers to get all of their location resources through a simple XML based request. LocatioNet's open-platform does not require application developers to integrate directly with positioning determining technologies or content providers. Through the LocatioNet Platform(TM), application and content developers can be provided with either addresses and/or latitude/longitude formats, as may be requested by their specific application. The API booklet gives developers the freedom to create applications without having been written with specific geographies in mind, but rather maintain an agnostic relationship with geography and content.

USGS scientists, along with NASA, develop new extreme-storm hazards map

USGS scientists, with their partners in NASA, using data gathered by a high-tech, airplane mounted NASA laser, have developed a new map showing critical elevations of the south Atlantic coast that indicate relative vulnerabilities of the coast to storm surge overtopping and inundation by hurricanes and extreme storms. They have also developed a new scale that categorizes expected coastal change (erosion and accretion) that occurs during storms. The new data used in the map will help local emergency management and natural resource officials prepare for storms and was acquired with NASA's Airborne Topographic Mapper, or ATM, and have far better accuracy and data density than data presently available from traditional topographic maps.
The map and scale are now available on the web at:

Interactive Map showing wilderness & human impact in the Barents region

An Interactive map, which displays modeled human impact on wilderness. The model was based on infrastructure, such as railroads, roads, settlements and utilities, and the impact as a radius from these features. In addition forests were used as a limit of the impact. The goal with this map was to create a too to be used as a guidance for conservation and environmental issues. The map is based on the GLOBIO methodology, which was implemented to set distance impacts and disturbances generated by infrastructure development. The extents of the zone are based upon several hundred field-studies from international scientific journals. Impacts include reduced accessibility to important grazing habitat, and changes in predator-prey relationship as a result of infrastructure and associated human activity. The results exist to enable the assessment of wilderness quality in the Barents Region and in a near future in the world. The database, and the maps produced from it, can be used to influence environmental decision-making processes within the region. Perhaps more importantly, it can be used to motivate decisions where the need to protect, or even recreate, pristine areas is the prime issue. The service has been developed by UNEP/GRID-Arendal, and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) affiliated environmental data and information centre.
