Microsoft to use ERDAS IMAGINE in Production of Flight Simulator Games

Microsoft Corporation has purchased ERDAS IMAGINE geographic imaging software to process aerial photography and satellite imagery to help create highly realistic ground cover and landscapes for its Flight Simulator and Combat Flight Simulator computer games. The Action, Combat and Simulations Product Unit purchased IMAGINE Essentials, which includes processing capabilities for image enhancement, geo-correction, visualization and mapping. Microsoft utilizes aerial photography and satellite imagery as well as land classification data and digital elevation models in its flight simulation software. These datasets add to the scenery and landscape that players see on screen as they make simulated flights or engage in aerial combat.

Digital image of Britain to be created by Ordnance Survey and its partners

To meet increasing customer demand for high-resolution imagery, Ordnance Survey will begin to fly the country later this year, using colour photography that will eventually provide a seamless photographic record of Britain. It is expected that more than 300,000 digital images will be needed to complete the overall picture. Each will be created at a resolution such that ground-level features as small as 25 cm across should normally be visible. The work is part of Ordnance Survey's wider Digital National Framework (DNF) initiative, which is creating a new generation of highly detailed and more sophisticated mapping and geographic data, which ultimately will be available to major customers via the Internet.

GPS for earthquake prediction in Japan

Japanese Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) has purchased more than 100 of the newly released 5700 Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) receivers to expand its Global Positioning System (GPS)-based network. The network is used to monitor the movement of the earth's crust and ultimately aid in the prediction of earthquake activity in Japan. The purchase is part of an ongoing program to upgrade the GSI nationwide network. Trimble, in cooperation with Hitachi Zosen Information Systems (HZS), Japan, has supplied more than 730 GPS reference stations since 1992. GPS data from the new 5700 CORS reference stations will support the existing monitoring system, which uses the Bernese processing software, to provide real-time information necessary to produce the network corrected Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) data created by the Virtual Reference Station (VRS(TM)) system.

Antarcti.ca Systems launches innovative library research tool

Antarcti.ca Systems Inc., a developer of visual mapping technology, has announced the launch of its Visual Net for Libraries (VNL) product. Visual Net for Libraries combines a superior navigation system with information-rich visuals to create large-scale data maps. For the first time, students, librarians and research professionals have an intuitive, efficient, graphical research tool to search, organize and view very large amounts of data in multiple databases and media formats. Using a library's existing Web-enabled PC, researchers can enter their topics into VNL and access library holdings organized in "neighborhoods" of information with graphical metaphors used to convey relevant search criteria. By clicking on any of the graphically represented categories, users can quickly access information about specific titles. Maps containing relevant resources can be "land marked" so researchers can easily return to them.
