Junior Scholastic Announces Winner of 7th Annual 'Can You Find the Mapman?' Contest

Scholastic, the global children's media and publishing company, has announced that Sean Gerhardstein of Gulfview Middle School in Naples, Florida is the grand prize winner of Junior Scholastic magazine's "Can You Find the Mapman Contest?" its 7th annual geography competition. Sean has won a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, and Microsoft Encarta Reference Suite 2001 software. The "Can You Find the Mapman?" contest tests kids' map-reading skills -from recognizing political boundaries and locating cities using latitude and longitude to understanding time zones and measuring distances with a scale of miles or kilometers -and challenges their creativity. This year Jim McMahon, Scholastic's senior cartographer and "Mapman," traveled to a mystery location (L'Anse aux Meadows, an archeological site at the northern tip of Newfoundland, Canada), and then created a contest requiring kids to trace his route to the secret destination by answering eight questions. To qualify for the grand prize, kids had to answer all questions correctly, and then draw a map of the area. The grand prizewinner and runners-up were selected based on their maps' cartographic accuracy and creativity, including design and color treatment. The contest results are featured in the May 7th issue of Junior Scholastic.
