MrSID For Native Imagery Encoding Inside Arcgis 8.1

Further buildings on a long-term and successful business relationship, ESRI and LizardTech have announced the native support of MrSID encoding capabilities into ESRI's recently released flagship ArcGIS 8.1 software. The results of this strategic cooperative effort now means that ESRI ArcGIS users can not only natively view MrSID images, but also quickly produce high-quality, MrSID images directly inside the ArcGIS environment, without requiring a separate software package. The U. S. Geological Survey (USGS), Yellowstone National Park and the University of Utah have signed an agreement to establish the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory to strengthen long-term monitoring of earthquakes and the slumbering volcano beneath Yellowstone National Park. This agreement provides for improved collaborative study and monitoring of active geologic processes and hazards of the Yellowstone volcanic field and caldera, site of the largest and most diverse collection of natural hot springs, mud pots and steam vents in the world. The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) is the fifth such observatory in the United States and will be based from existing facilities at the USGS, the University of Utah and Yellowstone National Park. The observatories employ a variety of ground-based instruments and satellite data to monitor active and restless volcanoes and conduct a variety of studies to understand their eruptive and seismic histories and potential hazards.

Russia Restores Fire-Ravaged Satellite Link

The Russian Space Force has succeeded in restoring communications with the four military satellites lost due to a fire at a command post 22 miles (35 kilometers) northwest of Serpukhov, Kaluga region, force commander Col. Gen. Anatoly Perminov told Interfax on Monday. Engineers had to work around the clock to restore communications via another ground-control facility. The damaged command post building will be rebuilt with more advanced hardware, Perminov said. A commission of inquiry is investigating the fire's cause. Perminov said he believes a short circuit in the post's power supply system was to blame. The fire destroyed all communications links, some of them underground, in the command post, local authorities say.
