GPS Satellites to be modernized
Lockheed Martin Space Systems has awarded ITT Industries Aerospace/Communications Division (A/CD), a $39M contract to upgrade up to twelve Global Positioning System (GPS) Block IIR satellites. The satellite payloads will be modified to incorporate a second civilian signal and two new military signals. In addition to new military and civilian signals, the GPS IIR modifications will include increased signal power and the ability to reconfigure signals and power in orbit. These improvements provide for increased accuracy and better resistance to jamming. Work on this contract will be performed at ITT Industries' Clifton, New Jersey facility and is a follow-on to the development contract awarded in August 2000.

Location-based telematics service for navigation

Motorola and Trafficmaster Provide First-of-Its-Kind Navigation System
Trafficmaster and Motorola, Inc. have announced their plan to jointly produce the first off-board, dynamic navigation system for the volume market that incorporates real-time, traffic-flow data. Motorola's navigation server, part of its new iRadio(TM) navigation application, together with Trafficmaster's real-time, traffic-flow data create the Trafficmaster T-nav service. The service will be sold through automotive manufacturers,
wireless carriers and aftermarket channels. T-nav will be available to customers in Great Britain and Germany later this year, and is scheduled for introduction in other European countries in 2002.

India, China plan telecom joint ventures
NEW DELHI: India and China have agreed to cooperate in the telecommunications sector and set up joint ventures to explore opportunities in other countries. Both the countries decided to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation and joint ventures in other countries during a meeting in Jakarta between Communications Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and Chinese Information Industry Minister Wu Jichuan, according to communications ministry officials here.
Both the ministers exchanged information on their respective telecom systems and agreed to jointly offer solutions for providing universal access in both the countries. Paswan is currently in Jakarta accompanied by a high-level delegation to attend the 2nd Asia-Pacific Telecommunication and Information Technology Forum (Aspactel), which concluded on Tuesday.
Indonesia too has expressed keen interest in sending a delegation led by the director general of Indonesian telecommunication to study telecom facilities in India. During a meeting with Paswan, Indonesian Communications Minister Agum Gumelar expressed keen interest in India's effort to achieve rural connectivity. He also requested India to provide training facilities to Indonesian telecom professionals in Indian institutions. Paswan in turn offered Indonesia on trial basis the rugged rural exchanges developed by Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) that do not require air-conditioning and are dust-proof.
Making a presentation of reforms in the telecommunications sector at Aspactel, telecommunications secretary Shyamal Ghosh identified the future agenda for enactment of the Communication Convergence Bill, the Internet telephony and rural telephony using the WiLL (wireless in local loop) technology a
