JShapeXi - interface between ArcView and Oracle Spatial

ESRI Partner GDV presents JshapeXi, a bidirectional interface for transferring shape files to Oracle Spatial. In opposite to file-oriented management of geodata, spatial data in database-management-systems has considerable advantages (user-access, user-rights, managing different versions, etc). JShapeXi reads and writes ESRI-shapefiles including all attribute-data to and from Oracle Spatial, using a documented format (Mdsys.sdo_geometry). With the JShapeXi-extension for ArcVIEW you can, after logging in to the Oracle-database, load shapefiles in a view for visualization or editing and rewrite the shapefile directly to Oracle Spatial. The program features intuitive and easy-to-use dialog boxes. JShapeXi is a native java-application and platform independent so it can be used under Unix as well.

Syncline chosen to provide mapping software for OGC military pilot program

Syncline, Inc., today announced that it has been selected by the Open GIS Consortium (OGC) to help develop and test open mapping infrastructures for military applications. The goal of the project, which is sponsored by the U.S. Army Engineering and Development Center and In-Q-Tel, is to test new interface specifications that enable organizations and nations to easily share geospatial information in times of conflict. As part of the OGC program, Syncline is building specifications for software products that use desktop computers to both search for data and render three-dimensional maps. The pilot program is designed to test common Web-based mapping interfaces for military use, so that cooperating nations or organizations can quickly integrate and access geographic information systems (GIS) data during military action. Syncline will extend existing OGC interface specifications to enable both intelligent database queries, and three-dimensional, photo-realistic terrain views over the Internet, giving users a far greater ability visualize and understand critical GIS information.

Clean-up campaign at Everest

LHASA, May 21 -- A team of 44 volunteers from China, Japan, Korea, Nepal and Georgia have climbed 6,500 meters up Mount Everest for a joint clean-up drive. The team, organized by a well-known Japanese mountaineer, will collect garbage cast off by mountaineers from various countries and corpses of victims at an elevation ranging from 6,500 meters to 8,000 meters. At the Everest base-camp, 18 teams from a dozen countries are making final preparations. Many of them are familiar with members of the clean-up team.

"The team made a clean-up at Everest last year. The current move is much bigger than the previous one. It began in mid-April and will last until the end of May. An estimated two or three tons of garbage will be collected," said Zintian, the team's Tibetan female interpreter who is staying at the base-camp. A liaison officer at the base-camp surnamed Guo said "The team has discovered a great deal of cast-off equipment and asked us to provide a tent for storing the garbage they have collected."

Hundreds of mountain climbers have come to Everest each year since the world's highest peak was opened to foreigners in 1980. However, many have left their oxygen tanks, mountaineering equipment and daily garbage on the peak. Generally, the Everest Administrative Department is responsible for garbage below the elevation of 6,500 meters, while professional mountaineers take charge of garbage above 6,500 meters. A garbage van goes to the base-camp once a week to collect garbage, which is then shipped to Tingre County for disposal.
