European Space Agency backing GPS system

The European Space Agency (ESA) has provided $466 million in funding for a European version of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) called Galileo, a move that could eventually lead to development of dual-system GPS/Galileo receivers that have greater accuracy, availability, continuity and integrity than single-band GPS receivers, according to GPS experts. The 15 nations that make up the ESA approved the funding for Galileo at a ministerial meeting in Edinburgh late last week. ESA Director Antonio Rodota plans to provide details of that decision Friday at ESA headquarters in Paris, and the European Commission is expected to provide matching funding for Galileo next month. Under development since 1999, Galileo is designed to provide highly accurate navigation signals from a constellation of 30 satellites operating in the same frequency bands as GPS receivers. The ESA funding will cover the development and validation stage of the system, including the launch of a limited constellation of three satellites. The ESA estimates the total cost of Galileo at $2.6 billion. Read complete story at: http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/ptech/11/22/euro.space.galileo.idg/index.html

Precision Lightworks adds larger urban scene modelling features to Nverse Photo 1.2

Precision Lightworks continues to advance the capabilities of its revolutionary urban modeling plug-in for 3ds max™ and 3D Studio VIZ® with the release of Nverse Photo 1.2. Nverse Photo is an interactive image-based modeling tool that helps users rapidly create realistic 3D models of large urban scenes from aerial photography. Version 1.2 extends and enhances Nverse Photo's automated texture map creation, improves the user interface for greater ease-of-use, and increases user control over modeling primitives. This equates to quicker, easier construction of massive cityscapes. The resulting models are suitable for architectural visualization, urban planning, security, visual simulation, news media, travel and tourism, web, and e-commerce applications. Version 1.2 advances Nverse Photo's automated texture mapping features. Prior versions of Nverse Photo already automatically create texture maps for modeled buildings from the source images, build materials, generate texture coordinates, and attach the materials to the geometry. Nverse Photo 1.2 now also constructs texture maps for the ground surface at a user-specified reduced resolution, and automatically generates the mapping coordinates for the ground surface mesh. (Users of previous releases needed to apply a combination of external photo editing tools, materials, and modifiers to achieve the same results.) Unmapped building faces are now assigned a default material that the user can modify for a desired appearance.

He was inaugurating a national seminar on ``Water and Land Management including CAD for Socio-economic Upliftment of N-E Region'', organized by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (Neriwalm) at the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship here.

Mentioning that the response to installation of shallow tube wells throughout Assam during the last two years was positive, he stressed on utilization of water resources in agriculture sector on a priority basis for removing poverty from the society.

Dr G.L.Kaul, Vice-Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, said the experts working in the water and land management sector should address the problems of the North-East in a concerted manner. He said ``Our experience during past 70 years in watershed management indicates that sectoral approach of development and path development notion of growth has been proved to be less effective, if not totally rejected in the management of natural resources''.

Integrated Watershed Management with Participatory Technology Development strategies is proved to be quite satisfactory and opened new vistas of overall development of the area. Integrated and scientific management of natural resources on watershed basis has been evaluated to be a most suitable model of development to achieve optimum and sustained production of food, feed, fibre, fodder with the improvement in the micro eco-system, he said.

Wipro keen to do a Europe in Gulf

ABU DHABI, Nov. 25 - WIPRO Infotech, which recently signed a contract with the Dubai e-government department and also established a direct presence in Saudi Arabia, is upbeat about business prospects in the Gulf and West Asian region, according to a company official.

Mr Tapan Bhat, Regional Business Head, Asia Pacific and the Middle East for Wipro Infotech, told Business Line that the company, which launched operations at the Dubai Internet City in June, has a healthy order book position in the region and prospects for business are very bright.

He said the company planned to repeat its European success in the Gulf region, adding that its entry into West Asia was a major step towards achieving the vision of being among the top ten IT services companies globally.

Wipro entered the European market 5 years ago and today its European business had grown to be a $100 million one, he said.

A clear indication of our success has been in the steep ramp-up of revenues that we have had in the Gulf region. We started with a one-man office here in June, and we have, in a short period of time, already increased our strength to over 25 people working on projects across industry segments, he said.

On the contract signed with the Dubai e-government department, Mr Bhat said that it was for providing management services to the critical e-governance Data Centre at the Internet City.

This project will service the Data Centre Operations on a 7x24x365 hour basis, and ensure that citizens are not inconvenienced due to lack of infrastructure support.

The project involves managing infrastructure from leading platform vendors including Sun Microsystems, Cisco, iPlanet, Vignette etc.

Mr Bhat said that the contract was also a good indicator of the companys keen intention to establish itself as a preferred partner of the Dubai Government and a vindication of the Governments faith in its capabilities.
