USDA signs department-wide site license for ESRI GIS Products

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and ESRI, the world's leading provider of geographic information system (GIS) software, signed a sweeping purchase agreement Monday, August 27, for a department-wide site license for ESRI software. The Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) was negotiated from ESRI's General Service Administration Schedule Contract and will enable USDA to embark on an ambitious and far-reaching program and strengthen program delivery by extending the functionality of ESRI GIS throughout the entire organization. The BPA sets in motion a five-year effort that will expand the use of GIS technology throughout the USDA by providing a complete enterprise suite of ESRI's GIS software to all USDA agencies. The $32 million agreement includes the roll-in of legacy software currently within the U.S. Forest Service and other USDA agencies. GIS software applications and extensions from ESRI include ArcInfo, ArcEditor, ArcView, and ArcIMS, which features an array of Internet-aware solutions, browsers, and mobile devices.

Intermap Technologies Announces NEXTMap Program to Re-map Britain

Intermap Technologies today announced its NEXTMap Britain program, a program that will re-map all of Britain. Intermap will use its sophisticated STAR-3i IFSAR technology to produce highly accurate terrain elevation data for the whole country. "This is the first time in history that an entire country will be mapped with topographic elevation data accurate to 1 metre in vertical and with a horizontal accuracy of better than 3 metres" said Intermap's Vice President of Sales and Business Development Michael Bullock. NEXTMap Britain will provide highly accurate Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) including surface models (DSMs) and terrain models (DTMs) for the whole country. The ground surface will be modeled in detail as an elevation point will be provided every 5m. The whole country will be covered with 1m vertical data. In urban areas and selected flood prone areas, a second data set with vertical accuracies in the 50cm range will also be collected.

HJW to Update Base Map of San Francisco

HJW GeoSpatial (HJW), Inc., a premier provider of digital mapping and photogrammetry, has been selected by the City of San Francisco to produce citywide orthophotographic maps. This new mapping project is designed to update the original 1"=100' orthophotos that HJW produced for The City in 1993. Prior to that first citywide base map project, HJW produced orthophotos on an emergency response basis, which proved to be critical in The City's recovery efforts after the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Aerial photography was flown in early September, prior to the national tragedy that prompted stringent FAA restrictions on commercial air traffic.

America's First GPS-Enabled Wireless Phone- The Sprint PCS SPH-N300

Sprint, which operates the largest all-digital, all-PCS nationwide network, and Samsung Telecommunications America (STA) have launched the SPH-N300, America's first GPS-enabled wireless phone. The Sprint PCS SPH-N300 by Samsung is designed to support future location-based and E911 emergency services, as they become available on the Sprint PCS nationwide network but works today nationwide as a Sprint PCS Phone. Sprint PCS is the first and only wireless carrier to meet the Federal Communication Commission's deadline of selling a GPS-enabled handset by October 1, 2001. This deadline is part of the FCC Phase II Mandate requiring all wireless carriers to more precisely locate 911 callers using a "handset solution" or a "network solution." The Sprint PCS SPH-N300 by Samsung will dial 911 today, but the GPS-enabled, location functionality is not currently available. This functionality will roll out in conjunction with local public safety agencies on a market-by- market basis. In the future, the GPS technology will also enable enhanced location-based services that could include applications such as driving directions, traffic services, and locating and planning for local entertainment.
