Syncline announces online mapping system for tracking municipal infrastructure projects

Syncline, Inc., has announced that San Antonio, Texas, the country's eighth largest city, has launched a Web-based interactive system for tracking municipal infrastructure projects. The system integrates Syncline's MapCiti(TM) Web mapping service with custom-made online permitting capabilities, enabling utility companies, contractors, and city officials to see the location of all projects that impact San Antonio's streets and sidewalks, underground cabling and piping, and overhead wiring. The automated system, which was built and launched in just four weeks, brings a high level of efficiency to a critical city function that had previously been time-consuming and difficult to manage. With the new online system, which is the first of its kind, San Antonio administrators can see, "at-a-glance," the location and timing of infrastructure projects, ensuring that they don't interfere with one another and that companies comply with city guidelines. As a result, the city expects to have fewer traffic delays and to spend less money repeatedly resurfacing the same street sections.

Cambridge MP gains insight into the future of mapping technology in central government

During a recent visit to the Cambridge Science Park the city's MP Anne Campbell was given a guided tour of mapping technology, which is contributing to a Modernising Government initiative. The Science Park's longest-standing residents Laser-Scan invited Mrs Campbell to see how a Cambridge-based company is making a difference at the heart of central government. Mrs Campbell saw a demonstration of the National Land Information Service (NLIS), which is intended to transform the way residents of England and Wales buy and sell property. Part of the service is provided by Laser-Scan technology which enables property professionals to outline an area of interest on a dedicated website; the site links various sources of information which were previously held in unconnected locations, improving turnaround times for property transactions. Mrs Campbell was shown the versatility of Laser-Scan's technology when she was taken for a drive around Cambridge guided by the traffic and navigation service from YEOMAN, Laser-Scan's parent company. YEOMAN's system delivers driving directions via voice to a mobile phone as they are needed. YEOMAN's demonstration of turn-by-turn navigation to a mobile phone is a world first; the service is underpinned by Laser-Scan's leading geographic technology.

MediaMapper Technology aids intelligence, other defense applications

Red Hen Systems' multimedia mapping technology has shifted from its original focus on precision agriculture and natural resources to include an ever-widening array of defense applications. MediaMapper's unique capability to georeference video and digital still pictures, easily link any type or number of media files to map locations, and create interactive "media maps" has generated especially intense interest from the defense community this year. Now in use by a number of military units and defense agencies with wide-ranging missions, MediaMapper's versatility in linking digital files and real-time video footage to geocoordinates offers an indispensable utility not previously available in a low-cost, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology. Its capability to export interactive maps to HTML format offers a convenient method to share information with users who have no mapping software.

Karnataka upbeat on IT event

BANGALORE, Oct. 15 - With doubts being cast over the prestigeous Bangalore IT.Com, the Karnataka IT department is at pains to maintain that the event would go on as usual. ``It will be bigger than last year's,'' said the IT Secretary, Mr Vivek Kulkarni.

However, he admitted that the global slowdown, coupled with the terrorist attacks and the consequent strikes, would result in a considerably scaled down participation from the US.

Last year, the US had a pavilion and was partner country. This year there is no US pavilion, though American companies with offices in India will participate.

While 220 Indian companies are expected to set up stalls this year, there is no estimate of the foreign participants.

``The exact number will be known on November 1,'' Mr Kulkarni said. Last year, a total of 375 companies attended the event.

The theme of this year's Bangalore IT.Com scheduled to be held between November 1-5 is `There's more to the future'.

And as part of this optimism, a special panel discussion on the impact of the US slowdown on the Indian industry will be moderated by McKinsey, which has done a joint study with STPI on the subject.

McKinsey is also sponsoring a CEO conclave, where select CEOs will discuss the trends and offer advice on what companies should do. Mr Kulkarni said that CEOs were yet to be identified.
