LE34 Establishes Infrastructure in Denmark with Trimble GPS

Trimble has announced that it has supplied Global Positioning System (GPS) reference stations and Virtual Reference Station (VRS) software to LE34 Tele A/S to establish GPSnet.dk, which provides networked real-time kinematic (RTK) services across Denmark. The core infrastructure service is monitored and operated by LE34. GPS users throughout Denmark can utilize the services for surveying, construction, navigation, asset management, agriculture and forestry. The establishment of GPSnet.dk follows other Trimble infrastructure project successes. These include: the Japanese Geographical Survey Institute Nationwide Network, VRS network in Switzerland for the Swiss government, GPS reference stations for the General Lighthouse Authority Network around the coast of Great Britain, the Channel Tunnel Rail Link RTK Network, and the Zurich International Airport Expansion Project. The GPS network, called GPSnet.dk consists of 26 Trimble GPS reference stations, Trimble GPSNet(TM), RTKNet(TM), Webserver software and a communications infrastructure. Installation of the Reference Stations was completed early in 2001 and the service is now operational and available to subscribers.

Link digital photos with GPS information

GPS-Photo Link by GeoSpatial Experts is PC software that simplifies the task of documenting where digital photos were taken. The GPS does not have to be connected to the camera, simply place the GPS in your backpack and take pictures. GPS-Photo Link will do the rest. Hundreds of photos can be processed in a matter of minutes. GPS-Photo Link watermarks digital camera photos with latitude, longitude, and other descriptive information. Web pages are created containing the watermarked photos and on-line maps that show were the photos were taken. ESRI Shape Files are also created for easy integration with desktop mapping software such as ESRI's ArcView GIS.

OGC Releases Call for Participation / Request for Quotation for multi-hazard mapping initiative

The Open GIS Consortium, Inc. (OGC) announces that a Call for Participation /Request for Quotation for the Multi-Hazard Mapping Initiative (MMI) Phase I is available for download at http://ip.opengis.org/mmi/. This pilot project, sponsored by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will establish a limited operational framework of interoperable services to illustrate the advantages of using products with OGC interfaces to access, fuse and visualize critical spatial information in support of FEMA multi-hazard mitigation, response and recovery functions. FEMA is an independent agency of the federal government, reporting to the President. By implementing interoperable geospatial services based on OGC interfaces, FEMA will be able to operationally demonstrate the value of a "common thread of interoperability" across federal, state, and local agencies and with other organizations supporting mitigation efforts. During the pilot, spatial information from multiple agencies and sources will be accessed across the Internet using vendor products and reference implementations developed during OGC's previous Interoperability Initiatives. Responses to the CFP/RFQ are due November 21, 2001 at 1:00 PM EDT and the program is expected to begin later this year with completion by March 2001. Inquiries related to MMI should be addressed to Mr. Jeff Harrison, Director of OGC Interoperability Programs, jharrison@opengis.org.

The OpenOSX Pre 2 CD offers Mac OS 10.0.x through 10.1 compatibility including dual-processors), additional modules, along with bug fixes. With over 350 modules, Grass is the only real alternative to ArcView GIS, which fully-configured will cost more than US$20,000 and is not supported on the Macintosh (MAC) platform. Grass GIS offers users state of the art three-dimensional dynamic spatial analysis and visualization. Prominent users of Grass include NASA, U.S. Geological Survey and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The OpenOSX CD greatly simplifies installation and installs a long list of all the required libraries and programs for full functionality. The CD is bundled with complete documentation and limited installation support.

Valence Semiconductor Receives GPS Receiver Design Win from Sony Electronics

Valence Semiconductor, a global provider of highly integrated system on silicon solutions for the broadband and mobile connectivity markets, today announced that it has received a design win from Sony Electronics Inc. for its recently announced VS7001 GPS Receiver chip. As one of the world's largest providers of handheld devices, Sony plans to design in Valence's VS7001 GPS radio receiver and its family of VS7000 GPS solutions for applications within its GPS modules and multi-chip modules. Valence has designed its GPS silicon solutions and reference designs to be compatible with Sony's current 2931 GPS baseband, as well as with future 293x generations of Sony basebands. Valence's VS7001 represents the world's first fully integrated, pure CMOS receiver and provides the industry with a clear path to the first single chip GPS system. With this technological breakthrough, the VS7001 provides GPS designers with the industry's lowest power consumption, smallest die size, lowest external component count and highest level of design integration of any GPS product currently on the market. Because the total power consumption of the RF is only 27 mWatts, the VS7001 receiver can be placed in battery-operated devices that will open many new GPS and mobile connectivity markets for both Sony and Valence.
