Twenty-nine sponsors and participants tackle interoperable location services in OGC Testbed

The Open GIS Consortium, Inc. (OGC) along with Sponsors Hutchison 3G UK, Sun Microsystems, Oracle with Webraska, ESRI with SignalSoft, and In-Q-Tel, as well as 22 other participant organizations will work together in the Open Location Services (OpenLS) Testbed. This testbed aims to develop an Open Location Services Platform with fundamental interfaces and services to allow a wide variety of location-based solutions to interoperate between infrastructure platforms and wireless devices. The use of open platforms in the fast growing location services sector will be a key market enabler, and will help increase the ability of companies offering location based services to compete across the various networks and platforms that characterize the global location services market. The Testbed will begin on September 13, 2001 with completion anticipated by early 2002.

RADARSAT-1 Continues to Support Ship Navigation in Northern Waters

RADARSAT International (RSI) has been awarded two contracts totaling over CDN $3 million to provide the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) and the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) with RADARSAT-1 imagery for ice monitoring and mapping. Both CIS and DMI have, and continue, to use RADARSAT-1 imagery extensively for the main purpose of creating ice charts for safe vessel navigation in the waters of Canada and Greenland. Critical to the renewal of these contracts is the commercial operational capability of the RADARSAT-1 program, whereby data can be delivered within hours of acquisition to the CIS and DMI. In particular, three RADARSAT ground receiving stations - Tromsų (Norway), Gatineau (Canada) and West Freugh (United Kingdom) - are instrumental in the reception and Near-Real Time processing of the satellite data before electronically sending it over the Internet within 2 - 4 hours to the CIS and DMI for further analysis.

Cologne uses SICAD/SD to create a Digital Archaeological Layer Atlas

Cologne's Roman-Germanic Museum now uses the Digital Archaeological Layer Atlas for its archaeological work, research and urban development. This archaeological and geographic information system, which is based on SICAD Spatial Desktop, provides a wealth of detailed information on the city's historical heritage - making Cologne the first city in the German-speaking world to boast a multifunctional digital solution. The archaeological and geographic information system includes a differentiated atlas containing full details of the time layers (ten on average). A wide and diverse range of base maps was incorporated, and the number is still growing. Among other things, the solution integrates the German Base Map (DGK 1:5000), the German Aerial Base Map, a Digital Relief Model, historical land registers, the Automated Real Estate Map (ALK) and mapping of modern soil incursions showing basements, sewers and line networks. If this diverse spatial data and other nongraphical data is overlaid with mappings of all archaeological maps of findings, the system's special added value becomes clear. The overlay allows spatial, temporal and thematic information to be combined or aggregated, enabling it to be used selectively for the purposes of science, archaeology and urban development.
