OS MasterMap set to revolutionise Britain's geographical information

Ordnance Survey has been part of Britain's national identity since Napoleonic times, creating innovations in mapping, which are known and respected throughout the world. Digital mapping is now the biggest part of Ordnance Survey's business, and is said by independent experts to underpin £100 billion worth of economic activity in Britain. Without the cartographic successes already achieved, we would not be on the threshold of OS MasterMap, as much a turning point in the history of Britain's mapping as the National Grid itself. The roots of OS MasterMap and the project behind it, the Digital National Framework, began to take hold in earnest when Ordnance Survey pioneered the computerisation of large-scale mapping in the 1970s. It created a giant topographic database that could be constantly updated in line with changes in the landscape. Over the past two years the database has been comprehensively enhanced to pave the way for OS MasterMap, a quantum leap forward. OS MasterMap will add intelligence to digital map data. It will radically improve its quality and versatility, giving users the power to choose not only precise, seamless geographical areas but also only those themes - such as roads or buildings - they require.

LizardTech helps 1.6 million in the UK explore the heavens

Following up on last year’s successful 'Window on the UK 2000' CD, LizardTech today is providing a preview demonstration of the Window on the Universe CD, at GIS2001 Conference in London. The CD, developed by the British National Space Centre (BNSC) is a fascinating electronic information bank of Astronomy and Space Science, with contributions from many leading companies and technologies including LizardTech’s MrSID digital imaging software. LizardTech’s MrSID Geo software was used by key members of the UK’s air and space scientific community to produce the CD. MrSID, the leading image format for geospatial and high-end digital imaging professionals, reduces high-resolution images to less than five percent of their original file size while maintaining the quality of the original. MrSID eliminates the need for multiple images for different purposes by encoding a digital photo or mosaic of photos into a single-source image of reduced file size. MrSID’s unique technology was essential for the BNSC to fit over 500 high-resolution images onto one user-friendly CD.

Trimble's New 3300 DR Total Station offers high performance measurement

Trimble has introduced its new 3300 Total Station with DR (Direct Reflex) technology for improved productivity in surveying and engineering applications. The new 3300 DR is a high-performance option that is ideal as a stand-alone measuring and stakeout instrument for data capture and field computations. The announcement was made today at Intergeo 2001, the world's largest international event for geodesy and geoinformatics. The DR measurement technique provides greater versatility of measurement than a traditional Total Station instrument by allowing surveyors to measure directly to any surface with high accuracy and without the need for a prism. This saves the surveyor valuable time and creates greater efficiencies. The DR also allows the operator to measure objects up to 100 meters away that were previously impossible or difficult to measure without special accessories and measurement techniques.

Navicom introduces the most precise GPS Translator and Pseudolite Systems in the market (HL)

During the world's largest conference of GNSS Positioning Systems, Products, and Services, held Sept. 12 - 14, 2001, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Navicom stole the show for the third consecutive year by unveiling its latest cutting-edge innovations -- the most precise and cost-effective GPS Translator and Pseudolite Systems available. Navicom's new GPS Translator System tracks and displays real-time trajectory of fast-moving objects, such as rockets which are capable of flying at supersonic speeds. This latest advancement in GPS technology consists of the GPS Translator and ground station. GPS signals from the mobile object's GPS Translator (via GPS antennas) are converted to telemetry signals, which are then sent to the ground-based telemetry receiver. The ground receiver unit provides the exact location and real-time trajectory and speed of such fast-moving objects. Pseudolite System is a navigation device positioned to replace the reliance on GPS satellites in areas that historically have poor reception signals, as well as for use with indoor locations. Pseudolite emits signals very similar to that of GPS satellites and can also be effectively utilized in ITS, which requires precise location and navigation information. Other applications include usage in automatic airplane landing systems and amusement parks.

Trimble Awarded Contract From Japanese GSI

Trimble has announced that the Japanese GSI (Geographical Survey Institute) has awarded a contract for the purchase of 360 additional 5700 Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) receivers to expand its GPS-based network. The network is used to monitor the movement of the earth's crust and ultimately aid in the prediction of earthquake activity in Japan. The purchase is part of an ongoing program to upgrade the GSI nationwide network. This follows an earlier purchase this year of more than 100 5700 CORS receivers for use in the same program. The announcement was made at Intergeo 2001, the world's largest international event for geodesy and geoinformatics. Trimble, in cooperation with Hitachi Zosen Information Systems (HZS), Japan, has supplied more than 830 GPS reference stations since 1992. GPS data from the 5700 CORS reference stations will support the existing monitoring system, which uses the Bernese processing software, and also provides the real-time information necessary to produce the network corrected Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) data created by the Virtual Reference Station (VRS(TM)) system. Not only does the network of reference stations collect GPS information to monitor the movements of the earth's crust to millimeter accuracy, it also provides accurate survey control points to Japanese surveyors, who will be able to access surveying data through an online bulletin board service.

IT mega event in February

MUMBAI, Sept. 19 - CONFEDERATION of Indian Industry (CII), Manufacturers Association of Information Technology (MAIT) and National Association of Software and Services companies (Nasscom) on Wednesday jointly announced that ICT-2002 (Information and Communication Technology), an IT event, would be held from February 6-9.

This clubs together the annual CII-MAIT annual event as well as that of Nasscom. ``This will be a regular annual event,'' Mr Phiroz Vandrevala, Chairman, Nasscom, told newspersons. The event has been described as a one-stop shop for everything and everybody in the IT and communications industry. Its focus will be the convergence factor, according to Mr Vandrevala.

From the Nasscom side, the focus will be `Opening new avenues for the software sector'.

The three associations said that there was a lot of synergy among their industries, with the CII representing over 4,000 IT user organisations. The forum would offer 20,000 sq. metres of exhibition space, of which commitments had already been received for 30 per cent. Infosys has taken up 2,000 sq. metres and is the principal sponsor for the event, which is expected to get 2,00,000 visitors.

The ICT market in India is estimated at $26 million, with software and hardware accounting for $12.2 million and communication amounting to $13.84 million. This represents five per cent of the GDP. By 2005, it will represent eight per cent of the country's GDP, according to Nasscom.

At a time when the economy was not doing very well, this would be a one-stop shop at minimum cost to the consumer, said Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman, Infosys.
