At the 6th Annual Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards held in Canberra on 18 November 2008, AAMHatch won the Land Titling and Development category for their “Gippsland Precision Subsidence Monitoring” project.
This prize winning project, “Gippsland Precision Subsidence Monitoring (2004-2007)”, which also won the Victorian Government Award for Spatial Excellence in September 2008, was commissioned by the Victorian Department of Primary Industries to establish the presence or absence of subsidence along the ecologically fragile Gippsland coastline from a range of land use activities.
The unprecedented requirement for high precision measurement over an area >1,000 sq km required: Innovative design and use of specialised equipment Rigorous error mitigation in data capture Sophisticated data processing methods in order to meet the project specifications.
The accuracy of surveys performed exceeded the specification standard of 10mm (6mm accuracy was achieved). No significant subsidence was detected between 2003 and 2007.
This project, undertaken for the Victorian Department of Primary Industries, was managed by Chris Earls, with project design and computations completed by Chris Earls and Don Abbey in consultation with Phil Collier of Melbourne University. The fieldwork, spread over four years, was undertaken by some of our talented staff: Don Abbey, Ricky Thomson and Simon Treasure.
The leading edge, technologies and techniques used on this project have the potential to be applied to many other land and structure monitoring and measurement tasks, including measurement of ground movement.
