Seeking a way to contribute to the massive relief efforts that remain for earthquake victims in Pakistan, an assistant professor at Harvard University and his colleagues from around the world have assembled a Web site, RISEPak. RISEPak utilizes current census information, very detailed satellite imagery taken after the earthquake, proximity to the epicenter, and updates provided by relief workers on the field to make accurate projections of which areas need aid the most. They hope to use the Internet to provide universal access to damage assessment information and track the progress of relief efforts so victims will receive aid as soon as possible. RISEPak stands for Relief Information System for Earthquakes — Pakistan. The aim of the Web site is to make this information available in a form that can be quickly interpreted by anyone interested in providing relief— from large relief organizations to Pakistani students filling cars with supplies and driving to affected areas on their own.
