BirdLife International monitors Africa’s biodiversity

5 November 2009
Nairobi, Kenya - BirdLife International, through its Africa Partnership Secretariat, is utilizing ERDAS IMAGINE to study how remote sensing data can be used to monitor land cover change in African Important Bird Areas (IBA).

ERDAS IMAGINE is the industry’s leading and most complete collection of software tools designed to manipulate process and understand geospatial information. ERDAS IMAGINE combines remotes sensing and GIS capabilities to extract information and create and update geospatial data.

ERDAS IMAGINE can identify where land cover changes may be affecting bird populations. Detrimental land cover change is the most important threat to birds and other biodiversity. This initiative will track land cover change on these key biodiversity sites, updating the status of IBAs, and monitoring trends in intactness. This information is then used for conservation planning and timely interventions to ensure rightful allocation of resources. This type of monitoring can be used to evaluate the impact of conservation activities at site, landscape and ecosystem levels.

Complementing ground-based monitoring, remote sensing ensures cost-effective, timely monitoring and analysis of land cover changes at key biodiversity sites.
