PUNE, India: For the first time, a GIS-based accident report and analysis system (ARS) is to be launched in the city. With this system, details of every accident taking place on the roads will be plotted on the city's geographical map, which would make it possible to generate analytical reports.
An initiative of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) and Janwani, along with the traffic police department, the accident report and analysis system (ARS) will be launched by city police commissioner Satya Pal Singh.
The technical support for ARS is being provided by Janwani, an initiative of the MCCIA, which was started with the objective of promoting sustainable development of the city. MCCIA stated that the need of the hour was to map an information system that could help in making informed decisions to address the colossal increase in traffic mishaps in Pune. The ARS has been designed to document the multiple facets of traffic accidents and help optimise the use of limited resources that are available to reduce the number and severity of the accidents. "While accident data is available, what will revolutionise this process is the generation of customised and actionable information reports for the police in quick time,'' MCCIA stated.
