Dukem , Ethiopia: The 800,000 Br information technology and GIS survey, which Adama University has been carrying out for the Dukem Town Administration, is expected to be delivered to the Land Administration and Environmental Protection Office of the Oromia Special Zone. The survey, which will cover the 378,000hct expanse of Dukem, 37Km southeast of Addis Abeba, was launched in August 2009 to coordinate the social, financial, economic, and land related sectors of the town using IT and GIS. The survey, which includes land surveying and aerial photography, involves data capturing, managing, analyzing and displaying of all forms of geographically referenced information, Awal Abdi head of the Oromia Special Zone Land Administration Office told Fortune. The survey targets the creation of linkages between investments and markets and will also cluster information on dispersed settlements and help redraw the town's boundaries. By the end of the survey the office expects to bring about good governance by decreasing corruption, having quick service delivery times, and increasing its fiscal revenue. The office's next plan will be to identify their potential resources as well as informing members on how to make phone calls and access websites with the system.
