Assam police officers to get GIS training

2 November 2009
Assam, India: A group of officers of Assam police is going to United States to receive training in operating GIS and GPS installation which is under way at the city police control room. The first trial of the GIS/GPS will be conducted by mid-December.

Acting on the recommendations of the Enquiry Committee headed by the former Director-General of Police, D.N. Dutt, CCTVs and mobile cameras will be installed in 91 locations as part of the Video Surveillance project for Guwahati, for which the Government of India has sanctioned Rs.10.38 crore. The key locations are traffic intersections, markets, malls, cinema halls, hotels and designated parking lots.

A contingency traffic plan — as per the recommendations of the committee — is being prepared and a panel headed by the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), has been formed to finalise plans for installation of traffic signals.

The State government proposes to upgrade the civil defence and fire service training centre. The Government of India has already released Rs. 40 lakh for procuring equipment for strengthening the civil defence set-up in hazard-prone districts.
