Abstract
The basic knowledge of position, quantity and availability of the spatial data on the real world is always required for the planning and decision making process of any development projects of the country. Survey Department, under the ministry of Land reform and Management, is responsible for national surveying and mapping activities in Nepal. It is therefore responsible for the production and distribution of maps and geo information in the country. Survey department of Nepal has been carried out the traditional surveying method of surveying and mapping and make available the required information in the form of maps and documents. Now a day, the development of computer technology has given various options on collection, processing and storing the spatial data. Geographic Information System is an effective tool for the planning, monitoring and decision making process of various development projects. Particularly, it is very useful for socio-economic, engineering and environment activities of the country.

This paper describes the status of geodetic net of Nepal, activities of survey department of Nepal on global positioning system for geodetic network extension, aerial photography, remote sensing, topographical base maps and the national topographic database of the country. Attempt has been made to give some idea on the activities of the development of national geo-information infrastructure to support geographic information system of the country and data dissemination policy of geo information products of survey department of Nepal.
