Application of Multispectral Remote Sensing data and GPS for area Estimation of Minor Millet - Kolli Hills, Tamil Nadu

Results and Discussion
The result of the classification (Table No.1) was compared with local community and Govt. Departments. In the process of digital classification, 8 major land use categories were classified. They include Plantation, Tapioca, Millets, Paddy, Mixed and Fallow/Harvested and Scrub.

From the results of the study it is possible to find out the area of each land use category especially Millets with the use of high resolution multispectral Remote Sensing data and with intensive ground truth information collected precisely using GPS which was helpful in identifying the millets location in the image and deriving the area of millets in the Kolli Hills. The pixel brightness values of the millets cultivated in very less area, paddy and plantation are shown in the chart 1 to get an idea about the spectral reflectance of different vegetation types.

From the table showing the area of the land use classes of 1998 and 2001, the following were resulted.
  • There is no much variation in Millets, Plantation and mixed crops area
  • The difference in the area under tapioca and paddy may be the date acquired was harvested period in 2001.
  • Around 5 % of the study area was covered with cloud in 2001 data which resulted in lower area under Millets and plantation
